Event: Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel Initiative [viewed]

This side event to the 3rd World Forest Week will be an opportunity to: present the outcomes and results of the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel Initiative (GGWSSI) African Union (AU) Commission projects supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the EU and the Global Mechanism-UN Convention to Combat Desertification (GM-UNCCD) in 13 countries; and showcase the use of landscape and inter-sectoral approaches and partnerships to support the effective planning and implementation of the GGWSI.

CCAFS Reports on African Agricultural Carbon Projects [viewed]

23 July 2012: A new study published by the Research Program on Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) and EcoAgriculture Partners highlights the results of six African agricultural carbon projects. Researchers found that communities are benefiting from a range of activities related to planting and managing trees on farms.

CIFOR Newsletter Describes Benefits of Slow REDD+ Implementation [viewed]

July 2012: The July edition of the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) Newsletter underscores that, despite initial assumptions that REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, and the role of conservation, sustainable use of forests and enhancement of carbon stock) would be "big, quick and cheap," it has instead consisted of many small efforts designed and implemented by many different donors and agencies, is slow to design and implement, and is likely to be more expensive than expected.

UNFCCC Holds Expert Meeting on Loss and Damage in LAC [viewed]

UNFCCC27 July 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat organized a regional expert meeting to discuss the full range of approaches and tools to address the risks of loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change and the relative cost-effectiveness of these. The meeting focused on the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region, and included discussion of impacts related to extreme weather events and slow onset events.

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) will hold an Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) for Central Asia, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and the Russian Federation as part of the GEF Country Support Programme. The workshop will bring together representatives from civil society, the GEF Secretariat, and GEF Agencies, as well as focal points from the biodiversity, desertification, climate change, and chemical conventions to explain and discuss GEF support for environment-related activities.

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is holding an Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) for West Africa, as part of the GEF Country Support Programme, including participants from Benin, Cote D'Ivoire, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra leone, Guinea and Togo. The workshop will bring together representatives from civil society, the GEF Secretariat and GEF Agencies, with focal points of the biodiversity, desertification, climate change, and chemicals conventions to discuss activities with global environmental benefits. Civil society organizations are invited to register at the meeting website.

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is holding an Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) for Southern Africa as part of the GEF Country Support Programme. The workshop will invite focal points from the biodiversity, desertification, climate change, and chemical conventions to meet with representatives from civil society, the GEF Secretariat and GEF Agencies. Participants are expected from Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
