Event: World Day to Combat Desertification Observance Event [viewed]

Heads of State and Government, Ministers, and representatives of intergovernmental organizations, the private sector and civil society will gather at World Bank Headquarters in Washington, DC, US, on Tuesday, 17 June 2014, for the global observance of the World Day to Combat Desertification. The event will address the theme 'Land Belongs to the Future – Let's Climate Proof It'. The full-day event include an opening ceremony, panel discussions, a concert, an exhibition and a film screening, among other activities. The event will also be webcast.

Event: Equator Prize Award Ceremony [viewed]

The Equator Prize Initiative will present awards to the 2014 Prize winners at a high-level ceremony at Lincoln Center in New York, US, on 22 September 2014, as a kick-off to the UN Secretary-General's Climate Summit. The Prize is awarded biannually to recognize and advance local sustainable development solutions for people, nature and resilient communities. The event will be hosted by the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

FAO Booklet Features 10 CSA Best Practices from Around the World [viewed]

FAO6 June 2014: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a booklet showcasing ten best practices from its climate smart agriculture (CSA) approach to the crop, fishery, forestry and livestock sectors. The report, titled ‘FAO success stories on CSA,' stresses the urgency of tackling climate change and safeguarding food security to boost farmers' resilience and adaptation to climate change and illustrates how rural communities are already transitioning to farming practices that are better suited to a warming world.

FAO Reports Results of Pilot Adaptation Projects in Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania [viewed]

FAO, Partners Develop Methodology for Herders and Grazers to Access Carbon Finance [viewed]

FAO30 May 2014: In recognition of the potential for grassland restoration to both mitigate climate change and improve profitability of livestock farmers, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), in collaboration with Chinese partners, has developed a tool that can measure carbon sequestration resulting from sustainable grassland management. The Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) has approved the tool, which will allow the carbon credits derived from improved grassland management to be sold in voluntary carbon markets.

The brief, which is targeted at an audience with a particular interest in agriculture and land-use issues, highlights the meeting context, key issues for agriculture and land use and areas where agriculture will be directly and indirectly addressed during the discussions, including both negotiations and side events.

World Mountain Forum Discusses Climate Change, Mountain Communities [viewed]

wfm24 May 2014: The World Mountain Forum (WMF), which took place from 22-24 May 2014, in Cusco, Peru, provided a platform to promote sustainable mountain development. The Forum convened sessions on four key topics: climate change; family farming; mountain communities; and mountain cities. These sessions included a particular focus on water and food security, sustainable investment and climate change adaptation.
