IEA: INDCs Could Triple Energy Intensity Improvement [viewed]

IEA21 October 2015: Full implementation of the intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) submitted to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) by mid-October would decouple power sector emissions from electricity demand, according to a special briefing by the International Energy Agency (IEA). However, based on IEA's estimates, the cumulative effect of implementing all INDCs submitted by mid-October also would lead to an average global temperature increase of around 2.7°C, which falls short of the “major course correction necessary” to stay below an average global temperature rise of 2°C.

Saudi Arabia, France Affirm Support for Ambitious Paris Outcome [viewed]

Religious Leaders Urge Ambitious Climate Agreement [viewed]

faith-leaders-declaration20 October 2015: UNFCCC Executive Director Christiana Figueres received a statement from a delegation of 154 faith and spiritual leaders representing different faith groups, headed by South African Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, calling for an ambitious climate agreement, reminding governments to commit to emission cuts and climate risk reduction, and pledging contributions from their own faith communities, including fossil fuel divestment.

Adaptation Committee Reports on Progress Ahead of SBI, SBSTA [viewed]

UNFCCC20 October 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published the report of the Adaptation Committee (FCCC/SB/2015/2) on its work from November 2014-October 2015, in preparation for the 43rd sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA). The report highlights progress made toward: promoting coherence in adaptation under the Convention and synergies with organizations, centers and networks; providing technical support and guidance to Parties on adaptation actions and means of implementation; and outreach, awareness raising and information sharing.

World Wide Views Alliance Reports on Citizen Consultations [viewed]

world_wide-views20 October 2015: The World Wide Views (WWViews) Alliance has launched the findings of a global citizen consultation on climate change and energy, which sought to determine “how far citizens around the world are willing to go” in the areas of climate action and energy transitions. The consultation, taking place on 6 June 2015, involved approximately 10,000 people in 76 countries.

Francophone Countries Discuss Linkages Among Land, Climate and SDGs [viewed]

francophone_unccd19 October 2015: The Institut de la Francophonie pour le Développement Durable (IFDD), a subsidiary body of the International Organization of the Francophonie (IOF), under the chairmanship of Senegal and in cooperation with the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Secretariat, organized a discussion on the topic of how to use the fight against climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as leverage for soil preservation. The event took place on the sidelines of the 12th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the UNCCD.

ADP 2-11 Opens, Considers Co-Chairs' Draft Agreement [viewed]

UNFCCC19 October 2015: The 11th part of the second session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP 2-11) under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has opened in Bonn, Germany. The week-long meeting is the last scheduled round of negotiations before the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC meets in Paris, France, to adopt a global climate change agreement.

IPCC-42 Concludes with Election of New Bureau [viewed]

Hoesung_Lee8 October 2015: The 42nd session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-42) convened from 5-8 October 2015, in Dubrovnik, Croatia, bringing together 424 delegates from 136 countries. The meeting focused on the election of members of the IPCC Bureau and the Task Force Bureau (TFB), including the IPCC Chair, IPCC Vice-Chairs, Co-Chairs of the Working Groups (WGs) and TFB, Vice-Chairs of the WGs and TFB members. An informal session, hosted by the Croatian Government, provided the candidates for IPCC Chair with a forum to present themselves to delegates.
