Australia Outlines Conditions for Joining Kyoto Protocol's Second Commitment Period [viewed]

9 November 2012: Australia's Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, Greg Combet, has announced that Australia is ready to join a second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol. UN General-Secretary Ban Ki-moon commended Australia for expressing readiness to join a second commitment period, and called on all governments to take decisive steps to address climate change at the upcoming Climate Change Conference in Doha, Qatar.

Event: CBD COP 12 [viewed]

The twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will engage in a mid-term review of the implementation of the Strategic Plan and the Aichi targets. The theme of the meeting will be 'Biodiversity for Sustainable Development.' The Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (COP MOP 7) will take place immediately before COP 12.

ADP Co-Chairs Release Note on Doha Session [viewed]

UNFCCC5 November 2012: The Co-Chairs of the Ad hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP) have released an informal note aimed at assisting delegates in preparing for the upcoming second part of the first session of the ADP, which will convene in Doha, Qatar, in conjunction with the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UNFCCC, to be held from 27 November-7 December 2012. The note outlines suggested goals and ideas for the session.

22 October 2012: Addressing participants to the pre-COP 18 Ministerial meeting on climate change held in Seoul, Republic of Korea, UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres highlighted that the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18), to be held in Doha, Qatar, at the end of 2012, provides an opportunity to make a global intervention that "wedges itself between a scientific fact and a widely-held misperception" that the climate change process is ineffective and stuck.

8 October 2012: The 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) opened on 8 October 2012, in Hyderabad, India, directly following the sixth Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. The two-week meeting will address a series of cross-cutting and ecosystem-related issues, as well as financial, administrative and implementation-related topics.

BASIC Countries Call for Strengthened Commitments Ahead of Doha [viewed]

UNGA 66 Concludes with Decisions on Africa, Indigenous Conference, SDG Working Group [viewed]

17 September 2012: Concluding the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), outgoing President Nassir Abdulaziz al-Nasser recalled the Assembly's focus on disaster prevention and response, including local resilience and risk mitigation, and on sustainable development and global prosperity. Also during the plenary meeting, the Assembly took decisions on Africa, the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples, and the distribution of seats in the open working group on sustainable development (OWG).

Event: UNCCD CRIC 11 [viewed]

The eleventh session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 11) is scheduled to convene from 15-19 April 2013. Regional meetings preparatory to CRIC 11 are expected to convene prior to the event. The third Special Session of the Committee of Science and Technology (CST S-3) and the 2nd UNCCD Scientific Conference will convene immediately before CRIC 11, also in Bonn, Germany.
