CSD 19 Concludes Without Agreement [viewed]

14 May 2011: The 19th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD 19), which convened from 2-14 May 2011, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, focused on developing policy recommendations related to transport, chemicals, hazardous waste, mining and the 10-year framework of programmes (10YFP) on sustainable consumption and production (SCP), but concluded without adopting these decisions.

IPCC's 33rd Session Establishes Executive Committee, Accepts Summary for Policy Makers of SRREN [viewed]

13 May 2011: The 33rd session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has decided to establish an Executive Committee, adopted a Conflict of Interest Policy, and introduced several changes to its rules of procedure. IPCC 33 also accepted the Summary for Policy Makers (SPM) of the Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation (SRREN) approved by Working Group III.

UNFCCC Executive Secretary Calls on Governments to "Pick up Speed and Focus on All Fronts" [viewed]

12 May 2011: During a press conference held at UN Headquarters in New York, US, Christiana Figueres, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, noted that governments are "seriously examining" ways of avoiding a "regulatory void" if the Kyoto Protocol is "allowed to lapse without a replacement mechanism in place by December 2012."

US, Canada and Mexico, and Federated States of Micronesia Propose HFCs Phase-down Under Montreal Protocol [viewed]

May 2011: The Ozone Secretariat has released documents in the lead up to the upcoming 31st Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG) meeting, scheduled to convene in Bangkok, Thailand, in August 2011. The documents include a proposal from the US, Canada and Mexico, and one from the Federated States of Micronesia, to phase-down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) under the Montreal Protocol.

Fourth LDC Conference Opens in Istanbul [viewed]

9 May 2011: Over 7,000 participants, including Heads of State and government and international organizations' representatives, are gathering in Istanbul, Turkey, to attend the Fourth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) from 9-13 May 2011. The meeting aims to assess the implementation of the 2001 Brussels Programme of Action and reach a new agreement to continue supporting the 48 countries classified as LDCs.

3 May 2011: The Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has published the latest issue of its UNCCD News publication. Issue 3.1 reviews the outcomes of the second special session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST S-2) and the ninth session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 9), which took place in February 2011, in Bonn, Germany, and reviews China's anti-drought measures, among other topics.
