AOSIS Chair Outlines Expectations Ahead of Durban Climate Change Conference [viewed]

Dessima Williams, Aosis23 November 2011: Speaking at a press conference ahead of the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Dessima Williams, Permanent Representative of Grenada and Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), has called on delegates in Durban to agree on the renewal of the Kyoto Protocol, as well as on a legally-binding instrument that would allow countries that are not party to the Protocol to take "legally and internationally credible" actions.

UNFCCC Publishes Report on Response Measures Forum [viewed]

UNFCCC16 November 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a report (FCCC/SB/2011/INF. 5) on the special event held in the context of the forum on the impact of the implementation of response measures at the 34th sessions of the subsidiary bodies. The event was held on 13 June 2011 in Bonn, Germany, following a decision of the Conference of the Parties (COP) (1/CP.16) that parties should cooperate fully to enhance understanding of the economic and social consequences of response measures, taking into account the need for information from those affected and evidence of actual impacts and of both positive and negative effects.

Event: Thirteenth Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate [viewed]

The thirteenth meeting of the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate will convene in Crystal City, Virginia, US (just outside Washington, DC), from 17-18 November 2011. US Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economic Affairs Michael Froman will serve as chair. The meeting will take place at the level of leaders' representatives. Members of the Major Economies Forum include: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, the UK, and the United States. In addition, representatives will attend from Argentina, Ecuador, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, and the United Nations. The session will provide an opportunity to exchange views in preparation for the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

UNFCCC Publishes AWG-LCA Scenario Note for Durban [viewed]

14 November 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published the scenario note (FCCC/AWGLCA/2011/13) for the fourth part of the 14th session of the Ad Hoc Working Group for Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 14). In the note, the AWG-LCA Chair calls on parties to produce concise text in each of the informal groups that can form the basis of a comprehensive AWG-LCA decision.

GEF Council Evaluates Reducing Fees, Discusses Private Sector Engagement [viewed]

10 November 2011: During its 41st meeting, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council approved its work programme for the next year and initiated the search for a new CEO. The work programme includes 40 project concepts and nine programmatic approaches, including 11 for the biodiversity focal area, eight on climate change, two on international waters, 23 on land degradation, and five on persistent organic pollutants (POPs).
