UNFCCC Receives Submissions from Parties [viewed]

February 2011: Parties to the UNFCCC have responded to a call for submissions of information and views reflecting  the outcomes of the recent sessions of the Conference of the Parties (COP), the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP/MOP), the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI), the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long- term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA), and the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP).

Event: From Local to Rio: Linking Women's Low-Carbon Initiatives with Sustainable Development Policy [viewed]

This side event at the 55th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, is being organized by the Women's Environment and Development Organization (WEDO), and the Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA). The event aims to highlight key issues of gender and technology and build support from the women's community for work at the next negotiating sessions of the UNFCCC, Rio 2012 and beyond. This event will draw attention to the roles of women as inventors, managers and distributors of low-emission technologies in the context of promoting sustainable development and effective climate change responses. Panelists will present successful projects on the ground and connect to women's leadership in a green economy, and highlight UN Women's goals in the context of Rio 2012. Panelists include: H. Elizabeth Thompson, UN Assistant Secretary General and Executive Coordinator of Rio 2012; Nereidge Segala, Farmer and President of Ser do Sertao, Pintadas, Brazil; Lucy Wanjiru, Programme Specialist, Gender and Environment, UNDP Gender Team; and Gail Karlsson, Senior Policy Advisor, ENERGIA International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy.

Event: 12th Special Session of the UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum [viewed]

The Governing Council of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) decided in February 2011 to hold the 12th special session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GCSS 12/GMEF) from 20-22 February 2012. During the meeting, UNEP will launch the GEO-5 Summary for Policy Makers, on 20 February.

Event: 27th Session of UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum [viewed]

The first universal session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 18-22 February 2013. The Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC/GMEF) of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) constitutes the ministerial-level global environmental forum in which participants gather to review important and emerging policy issues in the field of the environment. Among other matters, this first-ever universal session of the UNEP GC/GMEF is expected to discuss: the new Minamata Convention on Mercury and the Executive Director's report on financing options for chemicals and wastes; enhancing cooperation and coordination within the chemicals and wastes cluster; sustainable consumption and production; and justice, governance and law for environmental sustainability.

Event: Imagining the Worst: Foresight, Ethics, and Extreme Climate Scenarios [viewed]

This conference is organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Austrian Science and Research Liaison Office Ljubljana. The conference will address the nexus of futures studies and ethics studies in the context of climate change with a strong focus on implications of worst case scenarios on governance processes on national, regional (especially Southeast Europe) and global level (e.g. UNFCCC negotiations and preparations for UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20)). In particular, the conference aims to: reflect on recent developments in ethical theory; promote ethically aware governance processes; advance futures studies; and promote the cross-sectoral dialogue of science and policy making experts.

UNEP GMGSF Calls for Strong Government Engagement in Rio 2012 [viewed]

UNCCD Science Committee Discusses Indicators, Knowledge Management Systems [viewed]

18 February 2011: The Second Special Session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST S-2) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has concluded in Bonn, Germany, following three days of discussions on topics including: progress made on studies and activities requested by previous Conferences of the Parties (COP); the establishment of a knowledge management system; the strengthening of national, regional and global networks of experts; the refinement of impact indicators; and ways to improve the organization of the 2nd UNCCD Scientific Conference.

Event: UNFF 10 [viewed]

The tenth session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF 10) will assess the overall progress made on the implementation of the Non-Legally Binding Instrument on All Types of Forests and achievement of its four Global Objectives on Forests. The theme for UNFF 10 is forests and economic development. Agenda items will include: forest products and services; national forest programmes and other sectoral policies and strategies; reducing risks and impacts of disasters; and benefits of forests and trees to urban communities.

RRI Dialogue Addresses Developments on REDD+ [viewed]

8 February 2011: The ninth Rights and Resources (RRI) Dialogue on Forests, Governance and Climate Change took place in London, UK, on 8 February 2011, bringing together international and non-governmental organizations, civil servants and representatives from civil society organizations, academia and the private sector to discuss the latest developments on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, plus the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+).
