Bonn Climate Conference Focuses on Streamlining Negotiating Text for 2015 Agreement [viewed]

iisdrs-sd4211 June 2015: The Bonn Climate Change Conference under the UNFCCC included the 42nd sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), as well as the ninth part of the second session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP 2-9). Delegates in Bonn were faced with a gargantuan task. ADP negotiators had to produce a streamlined and concise negotiating text for the 2015 agreement; consider which elements to include in the agreement, and which ones to leave to COP decisions; and start substantive negotiations. They also had to continue efforts to enhance pre-2020 climate action. This packed ADP agenda stole the limelight, in spite of the SBSTA and SBI having a long list of outstanding issues for consideration.

Morocco, Ethiopia Submit INDCs [viewed]

morocco-ethiopia10 June 2015: Since the month of May, the UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that Morocco and Ethiopia submitted their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) on 5 and 10 June 2015, respectively. These announcements bring the total number of parties that have submitted their INDCs to 40.

G7 Schloss Elmau Declaration Affirms Copenhagen Accord on US$100 Billion for Climate [viewed]

G7 Germany8 June 2015: G7 leaders issued a wide-ranging outcome document, the Schloss Elmau Declaration, at the close of their two-day meeting in Germany, in which they affirmed the 2009 Copenhagen Accord agreement to raise US$100 billion in annual climate financing from public and private sources, committed to make the Green Climate Fund fully operational in 2015, and promised action on the post-2015 sustainable development goals (SDGs), resource efficiency, marine litter and renewable energy.

Event: 49th Meeting of the GEF Council [viewed]

The GEF Council meets twice a year to approve new projects with global environmental benefits in the GEF's focal areas (biodiversity, climate change mitigation, chemicals and waste, international waters, land degradation, sustainable forest management) and integrated approach pilots (sustainable cities, taking deforestation out of commodity chains, and sustainability and resilience for food security in Sub-Saharan Africa), and provide guidance to the GEF Secretariat and Agencies. A CSO Consultation will take place the day before the Council meeting.

GEF Council Approves Largest Proposed Work Program in History of GEF Financing [viewed]

Participants at the 48th meeting of the GEF Council 4 June 2015: The 48th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council adopted the largest proposed Work Program in the history of GEF financing, involving a total of US$709 million of GEF Trust Fund resources, plus an indicative amount of US$4.81 billion in co-financing. The Work Program encompasses Integrated Approach Pilots (IAPs) on sustainable cities, food security in sub-Saharan Africa, and taking deforestation out of commodity supply chains, as well as other projects and programs.
