11 August 2011: The African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change (AGN) recently met to prepare for the resumed session of the UNFCCC's negotiations, which will convene in Panama in October. The AGN Bureau met first, to discuss strategic issues related to Africa's engagement in preparations for the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa (COP17/CMP7). The full AGN then discussed several negotiation issues.
Record greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, record peak temperatures in many parts of the world, but also record investments in clean technologies that show that countries are ready to reap the benefits of going green: this is the compelling backdrop against which governments meet in November in South Africa for the UN Climate Change Conference.
12 August 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published the report (FCCC/SBI/2011/7) of the 34th session of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 34), which met in Bonn, Germany, from 6-17 June 2011.
9 August 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published the report (FCCC/AWGLCA/2011/9) of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA), for the first and second parts of its 14th session, held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 5-8 April 2011, and in Bonn, Germany, from 7-17 June 2011.
8 August 2011: The 31st meeting of the Open-ended Working Group (OEWG 31) of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer considered two proposals - one by the US, Canada and Mexico, and a second by the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) - to amend the Montreal Protocol to address hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).
10 August 2011: The UN Forum on Forests Secretariat has launched the first issue of its newsletter "Regional Voices," reporting on several regional activities related to sustainable forest management.
4 August 2011: The Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has published a note (FCCC/SBSTA/2011/INF.7) containing a synthesis of views from Parties and observer organizations on modalities and procedures for carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) in geological formations as Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project activities.
26 July 2011: The UNFCCC has published a proposal (FCCC/CP/2011/3) from Cyprus and the EU to amend Annex I to the Convention, as well as a proposal (FCCC/CP/2011/4) from Papua New Guinea and Mexico to amend Articles 7 (Conference of the Parties) and 18 (right to vote) of the Convention.
The fifth meeting of the Cartagena Group/Dialogue for Progressive Action on climate financing will take place in Apia, Samoa.
22 July 2011: The 13th regular session of the Commission on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA) of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has agreed on a list of elements for a roadmap or work programme to take action on the roles and values of genetic resources for food and agriculture (GRFA) in terms of achieving food and nutritional security and enabling countries to plan and implement adaptation and mitigation strategies in the context of climate change and anticipated impacts of climate change on food and agricultural production now and in the future.
