IPCC-42 Concludes with Election of New Bureau [viewed]

Hoesung_Lee8 October 2015: The 42nd session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-42) convened from 5-8 October 2015, in Dubrovnik, Croatia, bringing together 424 delegates from 136 countries. The meeting focused on the election of members of the IPCC Bureau and the Task Force Bureau (TFB), including the IPCC Chair, IPCC Vice-Chairs, Co-Chairs of the Working Groups (WGs) and TFB, Vice-Chairs of the WGs and TFB members. An informal session, hosted by the Croatian Government, provided the candidates for IPCC Chair with a forum to present themselves to delegates.

OECD, CPI Report on Increased Mobilization of Climate Finance [viewed]

finance2013-2014-oecd7 October 2015: In 2014, developed countries mobilized US$62 billion in climate finance, according to a report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Climate Policy Initiative (CPI). The report was prepared in response to a request by the Peruvian and French Governments, respectively the current and incoming presidencies of the UN Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP).

UNGA Debate Addresses Climate Change [viewed]

unga703 October 2015: During the general debate of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Heads of State and Government as well as Vice-Presidents, ministers and other high-level officials addressed climate change, among other issues. The statements to the UNGA, which were delivered from 28 September to 3 October 2015 in New York, US, tackled, inter alia: the 2015 agreement; the long-term global goal; climate finance; climate impacts and losses; and mitigation pledges. The general debate followed on the heels of the UN Sustainable Development Summit, during which the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted.

Event: High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF 2016) [viewed]

The Fourth High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), convening under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), will take place on 11-15 July 2016, followed by a three-day ministerial meeting of the Forum on 18-20 July 2016. The theme of the 2016 session will be 'Ensuring that no one is left behind,' as decided in an ECOSOC plenary session on 14 March 2016.

ADP Co-Chairs Release Draft Negotiating Text for Paris Agreement [viewed]

UNFCCC5 October 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released three documents in advance of the October session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP): a Co-Chairs' non-paper containing a draft of the 2015 agreement (ADP.2015.8.InformalNote); a draft decision on ADP workstream 2 (pre-2020 ambition)(ADP.2015.9.InformalNote); and a scenario note by the Co-Chairs on the eleventh part of the second session of the ADP (ADP 2-11) (ADP.2015.7.InformalNote), which will convene from 19-23 October 2015 in Bonn Germany.

IEA Reports Accelerated Growth of Renewables [viewed]

IEA2 October 2015: The International Energy Agency (IEA) launched a report, titled ‘Medium-Term Renewable Energy Market Report 2015,' which assesses market trends for renewable energy in the electricity, transport and heating sectors. The report also identifies drivers and challenges to renewables' deployment and projects their growth through 2020. The report, launched during the G20 Energy Ministers Meeting in Istanbul, Turkey, on 2 October 2015, further assesses potential impacts of enhanced policy actions under an accelerated case for renewable power.

UN Secretary-General: Unlocking LDCs' Potential is 2030 Litmus Test [viewed]

unga701 October 2015: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon reported that he is counting on the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to "play a constructive role" in making the Paris Climate Change Conference successful. Ban said this during his address to a Ministerial Meeting of the LDCs, and added that unlocking LDCs' untapped potential will be the "litmus test" of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

September 2015 Climate2 October 2015: During the month of September, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the World Bank, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) reported on new funding, and project news and other climate finance-related developments. Multilateral development banks, climate funds, and others released studies, briefs and reports, including on carbon pricing and climate resilience, and reported on events on climate finance readiness and disaster risk financing.
