UN Secretary-General: Unlocking LDCs' Potential is 2030 Litmus Test [viewed]

unga701 October 2015: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon reported that he is counting on the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to "play a constructive role" in making the Paris Climate Change Conference successful. Ban said this during his address to a Ministerial Meeting of the LDCs, and added that unlocking LDCs' untapped potential will be the "litmus test" of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

September 2015 Climate2 October 2015: During the month of September, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the World Bank, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) reported on new funding, and project news and other climate finance-related developments. Multilateral development banks, climate funds, and others released studies, briefs and reports, including on carbon pricing and climate resilience, and reported on events on climate finance readiness and disaster risk financing.

The messages came out of an informal high-level working lunch on climate change hosted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York, US, on 27 September, held in parallel with the UN summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda.

US, China Leaders Outline Vision for Paris [viewed]

china_us_flag25 September 2015: The Presidents of the US and China have issued a Joint Presidential Statement on Climate Change comprising a vision for the UN Paris Climate Change Conference, and announcements on advancing domestic climate action and enhancing bilateral and multilateral climate cooperation. China announced plans to launch a national emissions trading system (ETS) in 2017 and ¥20 billion (US$3.14 billion, September 2015) for climate finance. The US highlighted its Clean Power Plan.

Aide-Mémoire from Second Informal Climate Ministerial Consultations Released [viewed]

france-peru18 September 2015: The French Presidency of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC and the Peruvian COP 20 Presidency held informal consultations at the ministerial level with the object of stepping up the pace of negotiations ahead of the Paris Climate Change Conference, where a universal climate change agreement is expected to be adopted. The consultations focused on means of implementation (MOI), i.e. finance, technology and capacity building, and adaptation and loss and damage.

Event: World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Defense of Life [viewed]

This event, to be hosted by the Government of Bolivia, is expected to tackle “the threats of capitalism against life, climate change and the culture of life,” according to Bolivian President Evo Morales. The meeting is expected to result in a declaration, which aims to influence delegates to negotiate a new global climate deal that binds all countries to cuts in emissions. In 2010, Bolivia hosted the 'World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth'.

Experts Discuss SDGs' Creation, Implementation [viewed]

WRI16 September 2015: The World Resources Institute (WRI) hosted a press call on the proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with experts and officials who were closely involved in formulating the Goals. The speakers reviewed how the Goals were created, emphasized novel characteristics of the SDGs, particularly universality, highlighted key steps in SDG implementation, and noted the Goals' resonance with civil society. The SDGs are part of the post-2015 development agenda, also called the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

UNFCCC Releases Provisional Agendas for Paris Conference [viewed]

UNFCCC11 September 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the provisional agendas for: the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC; the 11th session of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 11); and the 43rd sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 43) and of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI). The meetings are taking place from 30 November to 1 December 2015, in Paris, France.
