Bishops Appeal to COP 21 for Ambitious, Legally Binding Climate Agreement [viewed]

appeal_to _COP_2126 October 2015: Cardinals, patriarchs and bishops representing the five continental groupings of national episcopal conferences have made an appeal to the negotiators at the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC, which will meet in Paris, France in December 2015. The appeal, which follows other calls by religious leaders of all faiths, outlines a ten-point policy proposal, linking climate change to social injustice and the exclusion of the world's poorest and most vulnerable.

Event: 24th Session of the UNECE Committee on Sustainable Energy [viewed]

The 24th Session of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Committee on Sustainable Energy will meet under the theme ‘Pathways to Sustainable Energy'. The meeting will provide the opportunity for member States to review progress on implementing the Programme of Work 2014-2015, before discussing and endorsing the future programme of work 2016-2017 and the strategic framework of the UNECE sub-programme on sustainable energy 2018-2019. The meeting will focus on the Committee and its six subsidiary bodies on energy efficiency, cleaner electricity production, coal mine methane, gas, renewable energy and resource classification. An international high-level panel on 19 November 2015 will explore what sustainable energy means for the UNECE region, for both reducing the energy environmental footprint and ensuring needed energy for sustainable development. The meeting will be preceded by the third edition of the Geneva Energy Conversations on 17 November, which will address the role of fossil fuels in sustainable energy systems.

GEF Council Reappoints CEO Naoko Ishii for Second Term [viewed]

naoko_ishii23 October 2015: The 49th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council approved a work program amounting to US$254.99 million. The work program comprises 17 project concepts and two programmatic approaches, focusing mainly on climate change and sustainable ecosystem management in the Amazon. In addition, GEF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairperson Naoko Ishii was appointed for a second four-year term.

ADP 2-11 Issues Non-Papers for Basis of Work in Paris [viewed]

adp2-1123 October 2015: Parties to the UNFCCC met for the 11th part of the second session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP 2-11) in Bonn, Germany, to continue negotiations on the agreement of the Paris Climate Change Conference. At the end of the week-long meeting, Parties issued two non-papers, one containing draft agreement text and draft decision text related to the agreement (workstream 1 of ADP's mandate) and the other containing draft decision text related to pre-2020 ambition (workstream 2).

UNCCD COP 12 Discusses SDG Target on Land Degradation Neutrality, DLDD Links with Climate Change [viewed]

cop12unccd23 October 2015: The 12th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 12) adopted 35 decisions following deliberations on agenda items related to desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD), including how to pursue the Sustainable Development Goals' (SDG) target to achieve land degradation neutrality (LDN) and how to align the UNCCD's goals and Parties' action programmes with the Goals. Parties also considered messages for the Paris Climate Change Conference, which will take place from 30 November-11 December 2015.

US, Pakistan Form Clean Energy Partnership [viewed]

us-pakistan22 October 2015: The US and Pakistan released a joint statement on a range of issues, including: security; trade and investment; education, science and technology; clean, efficient and affordable energy; efforts to combat climate change; and people-to-people and cultural ties. In the statement, US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif reinforce their commitment to an enduring US-Pakistan partnership, a prosperous Pakistan and a more stable region.

IEA: INDCs Could Triple Energy Intensity Improvement [viewed]

IEA21 October 2015: Full implementation of the intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) submitted to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) by mid-October would decouple power sector emissions from electricity demand, according to a special briefing by the International Energy Agency (IEA). However, based on IEA's estimates, the cumulative effect of implementing all INDCs submitted by mid-October also would lead to an average global temperature increase of around 2.7°C, which falls short of the “major course correction necessary” to stay below an average global temperature rise of 2°C.

Saudi Arabia, France Affirm Support for Ambitious Paris Outcome [viewed]

Religious Leaders Urge Ambitious Climate Agreement [viewed]

faith-leaders-declaration20 October 2015: UNFCCC Executive Director Christiana Figueres received a statement from a delegation of 154 faith and spiritual leaders representing different faith groups, headed by South African Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, calling for an ambitious climate agreement, reminding governments to commit to emission cuts and climate risk reduction, and pledging contributions from their own faith communities, including fossil fuel divestment.

Adaptation Committee Reports on Progress Ahead of SBI, SBSTA [viewed]

UNFCCC20 October 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published the report of the Adaptation Committee (FCCC/SB/2015/2) on its work from November 2014-October 2015, in preparation for the 43rd sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA). The report highlights progress made toward: promoting coherence in adaptation under the Convention and synergies with organizations, centers and networks; providing technical support and guidance to Parties on adaptation actions and means of implementation; and outreach, awareness raising and information sharing.
