G7 Declaration Highlights Energy Security, Climate Change, Sustainable Development [viewed]

g7-eu5 June 2014: The Presidents of the European Council and European Commission (EC) have gathered with leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US for a G7 Summit, during which they discussed issues related to Ukraine and global foreign policy issues, as well as energy, climate, economy and development, among others. The resulting Brussels G7 Summit Declaration addresses each of these issues and affirms the G7's commitment to “the values of freedom and democracy, and their universality and to fostering peace and security.”

Ministerial Roundtable Addresses Increased Ambition of Kyoto Protocol [viewed]

UNFCCC5 June 2014: For the first time ever, ministers joined the June session of the UN climate change talks. In a roundtable discussion on 5 June, they discussed increased ambition of Kyoto Protocol commitments and stressed the urgency of taking action. The roundtable provided an opportunity for ministers to: take stock of progress made in implementing the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol; discuss how to increase ambition in reducing emissions for that period; and address how lessons learned in implementing the Protocol could positively influence mitigation ambition, including under the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP).

June 2014 Bonn Climate Change Conference to Open with High-Level Ministerial Events [viewed]

UNFCCC2 June 2014: The Bonn Climate Change Conference will begin with two high-level ministerial sessions on: implementation of the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol; and political aspects of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP), including the nature of nationally determined contributions for the 2015 agreement and the necessary level of ambition before 2020. Ministers will also consider the recently published reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Event: 66th Session of the WMO Executive Council [viewed]

The 66th Session of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Executive Council (EC-66) will discuss, inter alia: the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS); aeronautical meteorology, public weather services, the Tropical Cyclone Programme, marine meteorology and oceanography, agricultural meteorology, water management, disaster risk reduction (DRR), data processing and forecasting, WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS) and WMO Information System (WIS), strengthening good governance and capacity-building, partnerships, and research under the implementation of the WMO Strategic Plan 2012-2015; resource management; and communication and public affairs. The Council will also hear reports from a number of bodies, including: President of the Organization; Secretary-General; Financial Advisory Committee (FINAC); 2014 Meeting of Presidents of Regional Associations and reports by the presidents of regional associations; 2014 Meeting of Presidents of Technical Commissions and reports of presidents technical commissions; and EC Panel of Experts on Polar Observations, Research and Services (EC-PORS).

FAO Issues Agriculture Brief in Advance of Bonn Climate Talks [viewed]

FAO29 May 2014: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has issued a brief, titled ‘Agriculture at the UN Climate Change Talks,' in advance of the Bonn Climate Change Conference taking place from 4-15 June in Bonn, Germany. The brief, which is targeted at an audience with a particular interest in agriculture and land-use issues, highlights the meeting context, key issues for agriculture and land use and areas where agriculture will be directly and indirectly addressed during the discussions, including both negotiations and side events.

African Group of Negotiators Discuss Approach for Climate Negotiations at ACPC Workshop [viewed]

UNECA20 May 2014: African negotiators discussed approaches for closing the emissions gap and achieving binding commitments on climate change at a workshop hosted by the Africa Climate Policy Center (ACPC) for the African Group of Negotiators (AGN). Participants agreed that a lack of capacity continues to hinder Africa's ability to respond to climate change, including to implement projects, develop policies and access climate funds, and requested the ACPC to compile a narrative of UNFCCC decisions relevant to Africa from 1997 to the present to support them in their negotiation process.

GEF Council Considers 2020 Strategy, GEF-6 [viewed]

gefcouncilmeeting27 May 2014: The 46th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council convened immediately prior to the 5th meeting of the GEF Assembly. The Council considered, inter alia, the long term strategy for the GEF, co-financing policy, the GEF-5 Work Program, and the Work program and budget of the GEF Independent Evaluation office. Agenda items specific to the sixth replenishment period of the GEF Trust Fund (GEF-6) included a proposal for the System of Transparent Allocation of Resources (STAR) for GEF-6, implementation arrangements for the GEF Small Grants Programme, and a summary of the negotiations of the Sixth Replenishment of the GEF Trust Fund.

UNFCCC Releases ADP 2-4 Report [viewed]

UNFCCC15 May 2014: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published the report of the fourth part of the second session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP 2-4), held in Bonn, Germany, from 10-14 March 2014. The meeting aimed to: make progress on elaborating the content of the 2015 agreement, with a view to determining elements for a draft negotiating text by COP 20; initiate discussions that facilitate domestic preparations for nationally determined contributions (NDCs); and unlock practical and realizable opportunities for raising pre-2020 ambition.
