Event: First Steps after Copenhagen: The Role of the Private Sector in Dealing with Climate Change [viewed]

This workshop is jointly organized by the Business Humanitarian Forum, the International Chamber of Commerce Switzerland, the UN-mandated University for Peace (UPEACE) and the UN Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP-FI). The workshop is intended to showcase the private sector's role in dealing with climate change both in terms of the post-Copenhagen process and policy framework, and its ability to address challenges and lead the way toward a low-carbon economy.

ICAO Commits to Develop a Carbon Dioxide Standard for Commercial Aircraft [viewed]

19 February 2010:  The International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection's (CAEP) met at ICAO headquarters from 1-12 February 2010, in Montreal, Canada, and announced the ICAO's commitment to the development of a carbon dioxide standard for commercial aircraft by 2013. This effort would result in the first global fuel-efficiency standard for any industry sector.

IEA Publishes Paper on Economics of Transitioning to a Low-Carbon Power Sector [viewed]

January 2010: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released an information paper titled “The Economics of Transition in the Power Sector,” which analyzes the micro-economics of transitioning to cleaner power generation technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, highlighting the importance of risk perception in investment decisions in the power sector.

UNECE Inland Transport Committee Highlights Measures to Address Climate Change [viewed]

25 February 2010: The 72nd annual session of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Inland Transport Committee, held from 23-25 February 2010, in Geneva, Switzerland, recognized that measures including better infrastructure planning, efficient border-crossing and transit procedures, technologically progressive vehicle construction norms and a greater role for environmentally-friendly modes, such as rail and inland navigation, are necessary steps to improve current and future transportation systems, with less pollution, in the pan-European region.

WTO Environmental Goods and Services Negotiations Focus on Climate-Friendly Products [viewed]

19 February 2010: The World Trade Organization (WTO) held a Special Session of the Committee on Trade and Environment (CTE-SS) to continue negotiations on the liberalization of environmental goods and services, and noted a renewed focus on liberalizing trade in climate-friendly products, such as solar energy-related parts and components, wind and hydro-electric energy and gas-turbines, natural gas and clean-diesel vehicles, and products used in Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects.

UNEP Launches "Low Carbon World" Website [viewed]

25 February 2010: On the sidelines of the 11th special session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), taking place in Bali, Indonesia, from 24–26 February 2010, UNEP launched the "Low Carbon World" website, a web-based communications platform that aims to facilitate the move to global low carbon economies by assisting knowledge transfer and simplifying access to information and tools that can be difficult to trace.
