In the fight against climate change, shifting the energy sector from fossil fuels to clean energy requires a massive, transformative change, not least in mindset. The challenge is particularly stark in those countries where the industry is dominated by large state-owned power producers.
22 January 2013: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published a report detailing how the Nordic region can become carbon neutral by 2050. The report, titled “Nordic Energy Technology Perspectives: Pathways to a Carbon Neutral Energy Future,” is IEA's first regional edition of its flagship publication series “Energy Technology Perspectives.”
21 January 2013: The Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21), in cooperation with the Institute for Sustainable Energy Policies (ISEP), has released its annual "REN21 Global Futures Report (GFR)," which presents a range of expert perspectives on possible renewable energy futures.
15 January 2013: The winners of the Zayed Future Energy Prize were announced on 15 January 2013 at the World Future Energy Summit (WFES), as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2013.
14 January 2013: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published a press release highlighting dynamics in Asia that will affect global energy trade over the next five years, as economies in the region expand and consequently energy demand rises. It also outlines co-operation with IEA partner countries in Asia aimed at addressing these challenges.
December 2012: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released the 2012 volume of Unasylva on the theme "The power of forests." The report highlights outputs from the FAO Global Forest Resource Assessment and examines forest issues in the wake of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
9 January 2013: The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) will fund 28 new low-carbon projects aiming to scale up renewable energy and energy efficient solutions in key emerging markets and selected developing countries in Africa and Asia.
20 December 2012: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released a technical report examining the demand-side aspects of energy sector greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions trends in the European Union, titled “End-User GHGEmissions from Energy: Reallocations of Emissions from Energy Industries to End Users 2005-2010.”
10 December 2012: A report by the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) finds challenges in using current national and subnational reporting regime data to estimate the potential impact of greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction measures and coordinate climate change policy in North America.
