ECOSOC Begins Meeting with BWIs on Post-2015, FfD [viewed]

ECOSOC20 April 2015: The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) began its annual special high-level meeting with the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), with a focus on the theme of ‘Coherence, coordination and cooperation in the context of financing for sustainable development and the post-2015 development agenda.' The meeting brought representatives of the Bretton Woods Institutions (BWIs) together with UN Member States to discuss post-2015 development and the Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD 3).

Future of Energy Summit Explores Transformation of Utilities [viewed]

African Countries Prepare for Paris Climate Negotiations at Seventh Africa Carbon Forum [viewed]

AfricaCarbonForum15 April 2015: Intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) to the anticipated 2015 climate change agreement will be essential for durable African economies, according to remarks made by UNFCCC Deputy Executive Secretary Richard Kinley at the Seventh Africa Carbon Forum. Speaking on the outcomes needed for a successful Paris Climate Change Conference, Kinley told African countries gathered at the Forum that "INDCs are each country's opportunity to express their development priorities."

Event: Climate Change Innovation Camp [viewed]

Ten finalist teams that answered a call for innovative solutions to climate change under a UN Development Programme (UNDP) nationwide campaign in the former Yugoslav Republic (fYR) of Macedonia will participate in a three-day Climate Change Innovation Camp. The finalists were selected from 130 submissions to the campaign, which was launched in December 2014 by UNDP in fYR Macedonia. During the Camp, the finalists will receive expert technical advice to develop their proposals further and compete for a US$10,000 prize to develop their proposals into prototypes. Finalists have put forward ideas involving: bikes and shoes to charge electronics; 'Eco Taxis'; solar collectors and billboards; solar cooling devices; re-using shower water for flushing toilets; using smartphones to create reminders for shutting off lights and optimizing heating and cooling; a smart app for carpooling; promotion of alternative means of transport; 'climate cafés'; and green roofs and facades.

IRENA, MIST Find Solar PV Cost-Competitive in the UAE [viewed]

renewable_energy_prospectsApril 2015: According to a study by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), renewable energy, in particular electricity from solar photovoltaics (PV), has been cost-competitive in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since 2014. Prepared as part of IRENA's REmap country study series, the report finds that increasing the share of renewable energy in the UAE's energy mix to 10% and electricity generation mix to 25% by 2030 could generate annual net savings of at least US$1.9 billion.

Event: Second Gathering of the Road to Paris Partners [viewed]

As part of Climate Week Paris 2015, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), the International Energy Agency (IEA), the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI) will gather for their second meeting as partners of the Road to Paris initiative. A high-level session will take place the following morning, on 20 May 2015. In support of a transition to a low-carbon economy, the Road to Paris initiative aims to create business-oriented technology roadmaps, analyze barriers, identify financial and political solutions, as well as public-private partnership (PPP) opportunities, and strengthen business and government dialogue to create enabling frameworks for investment in the lead-up to the Paris Climate Change Conference and beyond.

Clean Energy Initiatives Announced at US-CARICOM Summit [viewed]

In conjunction with the Summit, the US announced increased support for the Caribbean through a number of energy and climate initiatives.

Event: Open-Ended Consultations on UNECE Work on Sustainable Energy [viewed]

The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) will hold Open-Ended Consultations on its sustainable energy work in preparation for the 24th session of its Committee on Sustainable Energy. Member States will gather to review implementation progress of the 2014-2015 programme of work. Topics to be discussed will address a range of issues facing energy, such as: cross-sectoral integration; cost-effective development of integrated electricity systems; smart integration of variable renewable resources into the energy mix; deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) to mitigate the rise in coal use; guidelines for methane management; and implementation of the Hammamet Declaration. The Consultations' two-day agenda includes progress reports, keynote addresses on innovative thinking in energy and energy policy realities in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia, and discussions on, inter alia, a strategic framework, the Paris Climate Change Conference, and a vision for the future and next steps. The Geneva Energy Conversations workshop on 'Scenarios for Sustainable Energy' will be held on 26 May 2015 and will inform the Open-Ended Consultations.

Event: First Global Methane Initiative Workshop and Exhibition in the Middle East [viewed]

The Saudi Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources is hosting this Global Methane Initiative (GMI) workshop to disseminate technical information, present profit-generating technologies and share best practices that cost-effectively reduce methane emissions. Saudi Arabia is a member of the GMI, which is an international public-private initiative that advances cost-effective, near-term methane abatement and recovery and use of methane as a clean energy source in the agricultural, coal mine, municipal solid waste, oil and gas, and wastewater sectors. The event is being organized in cooperation with Saudi Aramco, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the UN Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC).

Russian Federation, Gabon Submit INDCs [viewed]

flags_russia_gabon1 April 2015: The Governments of the Russian Federation and Gabon have submitted their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) to the UNFCCC Secretariat. With their submissions, a total of 35 parties have formally announced their INDCs. The Russian Federation's contribution brings the total emissions from industrialized countries covered by INDCs to nearly 80%. Gabon is the first African country to announce an INDC.
