Saudi Arabia, Sudan Submit INDCs [viewed]

UNFCCC10 November 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that Saudi Arabia and Sudan have formally submitted their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs), bringing the total number of Parties that have made their submissions to 159. Saudi Arabia's INDC indicates it will pursue economic diversification and adaptation with the aim of generating mitigation co-benefits. Sudan's INDC identifies objectives in the energy, forestry and waste sectors designed to guide the country toward low-carbon development.

UNISDR Launches Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies [viewed]

UNISDRS6 November 2015: The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) has launched the Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies (ARISE), which focuses on ensuring that businesses play an important role in minimizing disaster risk. ARISE aims to facilitate the exchange of experience and knowledge on how to implement projects in disaster risk management (DRM) strategies, investment metrics, benchmarking and standards, education and training, legal and regulatory, urban risk reduction and resilience, and insurance.

Event: OECD Webcast Media Briefing on COP 21 [viewed]

This webcast media briefing will provide an update on the work of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on climate change mitigation, climate finance, energy taxes, fossil fuel subsidies and the economic costs of climate change action. The briefing will be led by the OECD department on climate change. Experts from other OECD agencies and organizations, including the International Energy Agency (IEA), the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), the International Transport Forum (ITF) and the OECD Economics Department will also participate.

WMO Reports Record High Atmospheric Greenhouse Gas Concentrations [viewed]

WMO9 November 2015: In the November 2015 edition of its Greenhouse Gas Bulletin, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reports that the amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere reached another record high in 2014. It indicates that atmospheric CO2 concentrations reached 397.7 parts per million (ppm) in 2014, and that between 1990 and 2014, radiative forcing increased by 36% due to emissions from industrial, agricultural and domestic activities.

The Ministerial Communiqué also stresses that "more needs to be done to bring CCS to the marketplace."

Fiji's INDC is specific to the national energy sector, where it aims to achieve a 30% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions compared to a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario by 2030.

China, France Call for Comprehensive Stocktaking of GHG Emissions Cuts Every Five Years [viewed]

france_china2 November 2015: Meeting less than a month before the Paris Climate Change Conference, French President François Hollande and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed that the outcome expected in Paris should include provisions for a five-year review of progress toward reaching long-term emissions goals. The Presidents released a statement following the meeting, explaining that "the results of this stocktake will inform parties in regularly enhancing their actions in a nationally determined manner."

PA13 Hears Partner Updates, PMR Publishes Report on Carbon Leakage [viewed]

pmr30 October 2015: The 13th meeting of the Partnership Assembly (PA13) of the Partnership for Market Readiness (PMR) and accompanying workshops received updates on mitigation initiatives from around the world, including energy policy developments in Chile, the status of China's carbon market developments, the Norwegian Carbon Credit Procurement Program, and climate mitigation initiatives in Sri Lanka. PA13 also received updates from the UNFCCC on progress towards Paris and from the World Bank on its Carbon Pricing Initiatives and Transformative Carbon Asset Facility.

Nordic Ministers Call for Transition to Highly Energy-Efficient, Low-Carbon and Climate-Resilient Economies [viewed]

Nordic Council Logo28 October 2015: Ministers from the Nordic countries have confirmed their commitment to reach an "ambitious, global and legally binding agreement" on climate change in a declaration signed at the annual Nordic Council's session in Reykjavik, Iceland. The climate and environment ministers signed the declaration a month before the climate talks in Paris, France, where the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC is expected to adopt a universal climate change agreement.

The publication, which provides an overview of OECD country progress on major environmental issues, is intended to inform policy development and evaluation.
