IEA Releases Medium-Term Renewable Energy Market Report [viewed]

IEA28 August 2014: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has launched its 'Medium-Term Renewable Energy Market Report 2014,' which finds that policy uncertainty could slow renewable energy expansion over the next five years. While the report projects renewable generation will grow by 45%, and will make up almost 26% of total global electricity generation by 2020, deployment of new renewable power capacity is expected to slow and stabilize after 2014.

UNFCCC, ILO Strengthen Collaboration on Climate, Green Economy [viewed]

unfccc-ilo27 August 2014: Guy Rider, Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), and Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), have released a joint statement highlighting the socioeconomic benefits of a transition to a green economy, including social inclusion, poverty alleviation and better jobs. According to the statement, shifting to a green economy could generate an additional 60 million jobs over the next 20 years.

Lighting Global Urges Shift from Kerosene to Solar Lights [viewed]

lighting.globalAugust 2014: Lighting Global has released a study, titled ‘Energy and Carbon Benefits of Pico Powered Lighting,' which confirms that modern solar lighting products designed for low-income families without access to grid electricity are far more energy efficient than kerosene lamps. Through Lighting Global, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the World Bank collaborate to support sustainable growth of the global off-grid lighting market in order to increase access to modern lighting services for people without access to reliable electricity.

Event: WOC Business Forum Workshop: 'Changing Oceans and Industry Futures' [viewed]

In conjunction with the World Ocean Council (WOC) Business Forum on Ocean Policy and Planning, WOC and the EU 'Ocean Certain' research project are organizing a workshop under the theme, 'Changing Oceans and Industry Futures: How Will Changes to Ocean Properties and Processes Affect Ocean Business?'. Fifteen ocean industry representatives will gather to give input to the research project, engage in participatory mapping of the industry, construct a future scenario and learn how the 'Ocean Certain' project will move forward with the insights gained at the workshop. The objectives of the event are both to inform industry representatives of the changes in ocean properties, processes and systems and to hear industry members' views on how these changes will affect their business.
