EEA Reports Recommend Environmental Tax Reform [viewed]

9 January 2012: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released two reports on European Tax Reform (ETR). The reports, titled “Environmental Tax Reform in Europe: Opportunities for Eco-innovation” and “Environmental Tax Reform in Europe: Implications for Income Distribution,” highlight that implementing the ERT could spur eco-innovation, create jobs, and result in environmental benefits, including greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions.

IEA Recommends Slovakia Increase Energy Efficiency and Diversify Energy Mix [viewed]

IEA6 February 2012: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released a report, titled "Energy Policies of IEA Countries – Slovak Republic Review," which lauds the Slovak Republic's improvements in energy efficiency and urges the country to increase efforts to strengthen its energy security and industrial competitiveness.

Event: Fourth African Carbon Forum [viewed]

The fourth African Carbon Forum is being held under the theme "Promoting Green and Low Carbon Development in Africa". Organized by the Nairobi Framework Partners, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UNEP Risoe Centre (URC), the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank (WB) and the Africa Development Bank (AfDB), the Forum will host a series of plenary sessions, round tables and workshops to discuss topics related to the carbon market in Africa. Topics to be addressed include the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, plans of action and scaled-up mitigation actions, improving energy access in Africa and REDD+.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Boat Unveiled in Turkey [viewed]

30 January 2012: The Istanbul Technical University in Turkey has unveiled a hydrogen fuel cell boat. The boat, which is named "Marti" (meaning seagull), was developed over four years with funding from several organizations, including the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

ITU and Telefónica Launch Sustainable Energy for All Mobile App Competitions [viewed]

1 February 2012: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and Telefónica have launched two challenges for the creation of new mobile applications (or “apps”) that address the issue of sustainable energy for all. UNFCCC Publishes Finland's GHG Inventory Review Report [viewed]

30 January 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the report (FCCC/ARR/2011/FIN) of the individual review of the annual submission of Finland submitted in 2011. The report notes that in 2009, the main greenhouse gas (GHG) in Finland was carbon dioxide, accounting for 83.5% of total GHG emissions expressed in CO2 eq, followed by nitrous oxide (N02) (8.6%) and methane (CH4) (6.4%).

Davos Forum Debates Adaptation to Climate Risk [viewed]

26 January 2012: Participating in a session on Adapting to Climate Risk, held at the annual World Economic Forum, in Davos, Switzerland, Lord Nicholas Stern, Chair, Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, UK, noted that the world is heading towards a 3°C increase in global average temperature, and warned that this situation "will bring temperatures not seen for three million years, with unforeseeable consequences."

UNFCCC Launches Database of Private Sector-Led Adaptation Activities [viewed]

26 January 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has launched the Adaptation Private Sector Initiative database, a new online tool that showcases how businesses and communities can adapt to the inevitable effects of climate change. It features good practices and profitable climate change adaptation activities being undertaken by private companies (sometimes in partnership with NGOs or the public sector) from a wide range of regions and sectors.
