The Governing Council adopted a resolution on cities and climate change and requested the UN General Assembly to convene a third UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development.

UN-HABITAT Releases Magazine on Role of Cities in Climate Change [viewed]

© UN-HABITATApril 2009: The second issue of the UN Human Settlements Programme's (UN-HABITAT) new flagship magazine, Urban World, features climate change as its main theme. The 92-page issue addresses, among other topics, how cities can keep their ecological footprint to a minimum through better land use planning and building codes, the role of construction in reducing emissions, and how climate change is not gender neutral.

Tenth Session of the Human Rights Council Discusses Relationship of Climate Change and Human Rights, Adopts OHCHR Report [viewed]

27 March 2009: The tenth special session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) convened from 2-27 March 2009, at the UN Office in Geneva, Switzerland. The Council considered and endorsed the Report of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on the relationship between climate change and human rights (A/HRC/10/61). The Council also adopted a resolution on human rights and climate change.

17 March 2009: The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) has officially launched the Cities and Climate Change Initiative (CCCI) at a conference titled “Cities and Climate Change,” which took place on 17 March 2009, in Oslo, Norway. The initiative focuses on mitigation and adaption to climate change impacts on human settlements within the framework of urban governance, decentralization, strengthening local authorities, and environmental planning and management.

Confronting Climate Change in the Arctic

13 March 2009: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) held an international experts meeting on “Climate Change and Arctic Sustainable Development: scientific, social, cultural and educational challenges,” which convened from 3-6 March 2009, in Monaco. The meeting brought together experts in the social and natural sciences, ethics, education and international affairs who sought the local expertise of indigenous peoples in drafting a set of 66 recommendations for follow-up action.
