27 March 2009: The tenth special session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) convened from 2-27 March 2009, at the UN Office in Geneva, Switzerland. The Council considered and endorsed the Report of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on the relationship between climate change and human rights (A/HRC/10/61). The Council also adopted a resolution on human rights and climate change.

17 March 2009: The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) has officially launched the Cities and Climate Change Initiative (CCCI) at a conference titled “Cities and Climate Change,” which took place on 17 March 2009, in Oslo, Norway. The initiative focuses on mitigation and adaption to climate change impacts on human settlements within the framework of urban governance, decentralization, strengthening local authorities, and environmental planning and management.

13 March 2009: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) held an international experts meeting on “Climate Change and Arctic Sustainable Development: scientific, social, cultural and educational challenges,” which convened from 3-6 March 2009, in Monaco. The meeting brought together experts in the social and natural sciences, ethics, education and international affairs who sought the local expertise of indigenous peoples in drafting a set of 66 recommendations for follow-up action.

March 2009: The UN Development Programme (UNDP), as the UN global development network and based on its belief that climate change is the defining human development issue of the current generation, has launched a global advertising campaign seeking to help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

3 March 2009: The Workshop on Climate and Disaster Resilience in Coastal Asian Cities convened in Da Nang, Vietnam, from 18-20 February 2009. The workshop was organized by the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) through the CIFAL Kuala Lumpur, CityNet and the Kyoto University, in cooperation with Veolia Environment and the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction.

27 February 2009: UN-HABITAT hosted the Regional Conference of Mayors of Capital Cities of Africa from 26-27 February 2009, in Nairobi, Kenya.

25 February 2009: According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), humanitarian needs related to particularly high levels of displacement due to conflict and natural disasters are severe.

24 February 2009: The Third International Conference on Community Based Adaptation (CBA) to Climate Change took place in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from 18-24 February 2009.
