Arab Countries Highlight Regional Priorities for Post-2015 DRR Framework [viewed]

UNISDR16 September 2014: The 2nd Arab Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) provided the opportunity for approximately 400 Arab government officials, donors, policy makers, planners, academics, civil society representatives and development experts to discuss DRR in the region. The Conference highlighted progress made in DRR efforts, reviewed implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) 2005-2015 in the region, and discussed regional priorities towards the post-2015 DRR framework.

World Reconstruction Conference: DRR Critical to Sustainable Development [viewed]

gfdrr12 September 2014: The second World Reconstruction Conference (WRC 2) brought together over 500 practitioners and policymakers from governments, civil society and the private sector to share lessons learned in post-disaster recovery and reconstruction. The conference aimed to help countries incorporate disaster recovery into their policies and institutions given the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters.

IEA Measures Multiple Benefits of Energy Efficiency [viewed]

IEA9 September 2014: A book by the International Energy Agency (IEA) identifies and quantifies a broad range of positive impacts of energy efficiency, repositioning it as a mainstream tool for economic and social development. Noting that the traditional focus on energy efficiency as a tool for energy savings has prevented appreciation of its full value, the study argues that energy efficiency is a “hidden fuel” that can enhance the sustainability of the energy system, support strategic economic and social development objectives, and promote environmental goals and prosperity.

UNEP Stresses Urgency of Climate Finance for Cities [viewed]

UNEPSeptember 2014: A handbook published by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) on climate finance for mitigation in cities and buildings underscores the urgency of developing methods to help all cities gain access to climate finance while maximizing related social, environmental and economic co-benefits. Given that cities account for over 75% of energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the publication calls for the 2015 climate agreement to inspire cities into action. Cities, in turn, will need to support leaders and scale up mitigation projects based on best practice and sharing of lessons learned.

UNISDR Calls for Focus on Cities in Post-2015 DRR Framework [viewed]

UNISDR10 September 2014: The 2nd Steering Committee Meeting of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) Making Cities Resilient Campaign focused on how to accommodate urban priorities in the post-2015 disaster risk reduction (DRR) framework. Participants stressed that the post-2015 framework should address the local level, and that national governments should support decentralization and be responsive to cities' needs.

Latin American and Caribbean Forum Discusses Future of Carbon Markets [viewed]

Latinamericanforum5 September 2014: The eighth Latin American and Caribbean Carbon Forum (LACCF) brought together businesses, governments and other stakeholders to exchange information on the latest developments in emissions trading schemes (ETS), low-emission development and the future of the carbon markets. Participants addressed, inter alia: climate change adaptation and mitigation opportunities at multiple levels; and climate finance and policy options, including carbon pricing and the role of the public and private sectors in concerted climate action.

Event: 5th Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development [viewed]

The Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development (APMCHUD) was established in 2006 to promote sustainable housing and urban development for human settlements in the Asia-Pacific Region. The theme of the 5th APMCHUD is 'Equal Opportunity for Sustainable Development'. Sub-themes will include: inclusive urban planning; upgrading informal settlements; inclusive technology for the delivery of basic services; financing sustainable housing; and urban development for equal opportunity responding to natural and climate change-related disasters.
