Saudi Arabia, Sudan Submit INDCs [viewed]

UNFCCC10 November 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that Saudi Arabia and Sudan have formally submitted their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs), bringing the total number of Parties that have made their submissions to 159. Saudi Arabia's INDC indicates it will pursue economic diversification and adaptation with the aim of generating mitigation co-benefits. Sudan's INDC identifies objectives in the energy, forestry and waste sectors designed to guide the country toward low-carbon development.

UNISDR Launches Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies [viewed]

UNISDRS6 November 2015: The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) has launched the Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies (ARISE), which focuses on ensuring that businesses play an important role in minimizing disaster risk. ARISE aims to facilitate the exchange of experience and knowledge on how to implement projects in disaster risk management (DRM) strategies, investment metrics, benchmarking and standards, education and training, legal and regulatory, urban risk reduction and resilience, and insurance.

WMO Reports Record High Atmospheric Greenhouse Gas Concentrations [viewed]

WMO9 November 2015: In the November 2015 edition of its Greenhouse Gas Bulletin, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reports that the amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere reached another record high in 2014. It indicates that atmospheric CO2 concentrations reached 397.7 parts per million (ppm) in 2014, and that between 1990 and 2014, radiative forcing increased by 36% due to emissions from industrial, agricultural and domestic activities.

World Bank Highlights Poverty Reduction Benefits of Climate-Smart Development [viewed]

World Bank8 November 2015: In advance of the Paris Climate Change Conference, the World Bank has published a report, titled 'Shock Waves: Managing the Impacts of Climate Change on Poverty,' which finds that poverty reduction and the fight against climate change can be more effectively achieved if addressed in tandem. It indicates that climate change poses “an acute threat” to poorer people, and has the potential to push more than 100 million people back into poverty by 2030, mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

New Climate Economy Highlights Benefits of Energy Efficiency Standards [viewed]

the_new_climate_economy5 November 2015: The New Climate Economy reports that raising energy efficiency standards around the world could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 6.9 gigatonnes carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO2e) per year by 2030. Exceeding the current annual emissions of the US, such reductions would also provide economic savings in appliances, buildings, industry and transport. The research appears in a working paper, titled ‘Raising Energy Efficiency Standards to the Global Best,' which provides recommendations for raising energy efficiency standards in G20 countries and globally.

GCF Board Approves First Projects [viewed]

green-climate-fund-new6 November 2015: The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is set to fund its first projects after the Board approved eight proposals at its 11th meeting (GCFB 11). The approved funding, which is contingent on fulfillment of specified conditions for seven of the projects, totals US$168 million. At the meeting, the Board also adopted an initial monitoring and accountability framework for accredited entities, a process to develop a strategic plan, a decision on the readiness programme and an updated set of administrative guidelines on procurement.

Non-State Actor Zone for Climate Action Registers 2,245 Commitments [viewed]

UNFCCC Lima and Paris Climate Change Conferences6 November 2015: The UN, the French and Peruvian Governments, and businesses have added a total of 2,245 commitments to the Non-State Actor Zone for Climate Action (NAZCA) portal, launched in 2014 by the Peruvian Presidency of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC. The information released brought the total number of commitments registered in the NAZCA portal to 6,649.
