6 October 2009: The International Labour Organization (ILO) has a launched a new project to reduce the impact of changing weather patterns on the local economy.
7 October 2009: Leaders of large municipalities in Europe and the US have highlighted the role of local and regional authorities in mitigating and adapting to climate change.
2 October 2009: The Governors' Global Climate Summit 2, held from 30 September-2 October 2009, in Los Angeles, US, produced a declaration in which leaders present at the meeting committed to work together to pursue clean transportation and mobility, support national climate change legislation, and include forests in climate policy development.
30 September 2009: National and local policies are needed to support walking and cycling as sustainable and alternative ways of transport in urban areas that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions as well as air and noise pollution, limit urban congestion and favor human health. This is the conclusion of the workshop titled “Safe and Healthy Walking and Cycling in Urban Areas” held in Prague, Czech Republic, from 24-25 September 2009.

28 September: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has released a study on energy-efficient housing entitled “Green Homes.”
28 September 2009: One of the outcomes of the 70th session of the UNECE Committee on Housing and Land Management, which convened from 23-25 September 2009, in Geneva, Switzerland, was the decision to include in the Committee's programme of work a study on climate neutral cities.
25 September 2009: Addressing the General Assembly's annual General Debate, small island States' leaders warned that their very existence may be at stake if urgent measures are not introduced to slash greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to rising global temperatures.
24 September 2009: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a report entitled “Climate Change Science Compendium 2009.” The report, compiled in association with scientists around the world, reviews some 400 major scientific contributions to our understanding of Earth Systems and climate change that have been released through peer-reviewed literature, or from research institutions, over the last three years.
