Event: ADB Urban Forum 2011: Financing Future Cities [viewed]

The objectives of this forum include to: familiarize participants with the Asian Development Bank's (ADB's) Urban Operational Plan focusing on the urban environment, the urban economy and urban equity (the 3E agenda) and the products available to support its implementation; increase understanding of mechanisms available for financing green, competitive and inclusive cities; raise awareness of innovative practices in financing green, competitive and inclusive cities; and increase understanding between financiers and borrowers on opportunities and constraints to financing city/regional projects. Representatives from ministries of finance and urban development, mayors, financial and urban planners, financing agencies, contractors, infrastructure companies, and donors are expected to attend.

Event: Integrated Climate Impact Assessment Tool for Urban Policy Makers: Expert Consultations [viewed]

This invitation-only event will gather policy makers and experts from Asia and around the world to review the features of available tools for urban policy makers to assess the complex nature of impact and risk assessment for prioritizing projects based on costs and benefits. Specific focus will be given to the water, energy and transport sectors and the application of the Business Case Methodology. Speakers will include Rajendra Pachauri, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Chairman, Leen Hordijk, EU Joint Research Centre, and Bindu Lohani, Asian Development Bank (ADB).

UNHCR Marks 60th Anniversary of Refugee Convention [viewed]

28 July 2011: In his statement delivered on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres underlined that the causes of forced displacement are multiplying, noting that extreme poverty and the impact of climate change add to the traditional causes of displacement.

These events are organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for researchers of environmental displacement and climate-induced migration in Asia and the Pacific. On 14 September, ADB is organizing a Researchers' Workshop on Climate Change and Migration in Asia and the Pacific. On 15-16 September, ADB is organizing a Regional Conference on Policy Responses to Climate-Induced Migration in Asia and the Pacific.

UN Security Council Debates Security Impacts of Climate Change [viewed]

20 July 2011: The UN Security Council held its second thematic debate on “Maintenance of international peace and security: the impact of climate change,” on 20 July 2011, in New York, US. Many delegates expressed concern that adverse effects of climate change could aggravate existing threats to international peace and security. While noting that the loss of territory in some States due to sea-level rise, particularly in small, low-lying island States, could have security implications, the Security Council could not agree that it had a role to play in this regard.

UNCSD Secretary-General Outlines Eight Priorities for UNCSD [viewed]

13 July 2011: Sha Zukang, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs and Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), summarized his recent speech in Washington, DC, US, in a new post to his blog. He elaborated on eight “new and emerging challenges” that States and other stakeholders have highlighted for priority attention. The challenges include energy access, green jobs, sustainable agriculture, marine resources and financing.

Event: Recharging the European Electric Vehicle Market: Meeting Infrastructure and Standardisation Challenges [viewed]

This symposium will seek to move the current electric vehicle debate forward and guide participants through the challenges that lie ahead in the development of a standardized European electric vehicle market, such as Europe-wide charging and electricity infrastructure standardization. The symposium will also consider the implications for city planners of an expanded market-share for electric vehicles, as well as ongoing research and development advances, EU subsidies and improvements to supply from the power grid.

Four East African Local Governments Commit to UN/ISDR Resilience Campaign [viewed]
