Caribbean Conference Assesses GEF Project on Watershed and Coastal Area Management [viewed]

Event: Transforming Transportation [viewed]

The ninth annual “Transforming Transportation” event will take place at the World Bank in Washington, DC, US, from 26-27 January 2012, and will focus on big ideas to scale up sustainable transport best practices in cities worldwide. The plenary session on Day 1 will discuss the future of the city, and on Day 2 it will look beyond the transport sector for inspiration on how to scale up best practices. Other sessions will include moderated panel discussions and rapid presentations of innovative ideas. The agenda also features screenings of urban transport videos and a cocktail reception to honor the late Dr. Leon "Lee" Schipper. Transforming Transportation 2012 is open to the public, and is organized by EMBARQ, The World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, Institute for Transportation Development and Policy, Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities, and the Partnership for Sustainable Low Carbon Transport.

UN/ISDR Pilots Resilience Local Government Self-Assessment Tool [viewed]

14 December 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced that, together with the ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, it has piloted the Local Government Self-Assessment Tool (LG-SAT), designed to assist disaster reduction efforts by cities and local governments that have signed up to the global "Making Cities Resilient" Campaign.

FAO Raises Alarms on Consequences of Mountain Forests Loss [viewed]

FAO9 December 2011: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, has published a report titled "Mountain Forests in a Changing World" that brings attention to the threats to mountain forests including increasing temperatures and wildfires, population growth and food and fuel insecurity.

Development Banks Agree on Partnership for Climate Action in Cities [viewed]

5 December 2011: Five multilateral development banks have agreed on a new partnership to support climate action in cities, including better coordination, and to deepen support to cities in adapting to and mitigating climate change, such as the development of common tools and metrics for cities.

7 December 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released the fifth edition of the Climate Action publication, intended to educate businesses, governments and NGOs on what they can do to reduce their carbon footprint and adapt to the impacts of climate change. UNEP and Partners Release Report on Climate Change, Migration and Conflict in the Sahel [viewed]

6 December 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the United Nations University (UNU) and the Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS), has released a report titled “Livelihood Security: Climate Change, Migration and Conflict in the Sahel.” The project aimed to analyze the historical climate trends in the region, identify “hotspots” and determine the implications of climate change on natural resource-led livelihoods in the Sahel.
