Non-State Actors Sign Paris Pledge for Action [viewed]

cop2116 December 2015: A call to action to support the Paris Agreement has been launched, with almost 700 major cities, regions, companies and investors as initial signatories. Under the Paris Pledge for Action, or 'L'Appel de Paris,' these signatories commit to aid in the quick and effective implementation of the Paris Agreement and to contribute to accelerating the necessary transformation to combat climate change.

COP 21 Considers Revised Draft Paris Outcome [viewed]

cop21_day1110 December 2015: Negotiations continued on the draft outcome of the Paris Climate Change Conference on Thursday, 10 December, with COP 21 President Laurent Fabius introducing a revised draft text in the evening. Fabius said there are “open options” on the most complex issues of differentiation, finance and ambition, and asked delegates to examine the document with a "new perspective,” keeping the final agreement in mind, suggesting “we are extremely close to the finish line.” Following a second night of negotiations, delegates were told on Friday that the sixth meeting of the Comité de Paris would convene Saturday morning, 12 December, during which a final draft of the proposed Paris Outcome would be presented.

LPAA Results in Over 70 Major Climate Action Initiatives [viewed]

lpaa9 December 2015: The Lima-Paris Action Agenda (LPAA), which convened on the sidelines of the Paris Climate Change Conference, illustrated the “massive and rising response by cities, regions, business and civil society to take ambitious climate action, frequently in cooperation with national governments,” according to the UNFCCC Secretariat. The LPAA resulted in over 70 major initiatives from nearly 10,000 actors from 180 countries on agriculture, building, business, cities, forests, innovation, private finance, resilience, short-lived climate pollutants, transport and water.

UNEP and ICLEI Announce Collaboration [viewed]

unep_iclei8 December 2015: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability at the Cities & Regions Pavilion on the sidelines of the Paris Climate Change Conference. The MoU is expected to serve as an umbrella for a range of initiatives between UNEP and ICLEI, addressing areas such as sustainable consumption and production (SCP), air pollution, biodiversity, energy and transport.

LPAA Launches 5-Year Vision for Climate Action by Cities, Regions [viewed]

lpaa8 December 2015: The Lima-Paris Action Agenda (LPAA), a partnership of governments and the UN, launched a five-year vision aiming to strengthen action on climate change by cities and regions, on the sidelines of the Paris Climate Change Conference. The LPAA is led jointly by the Governments of Peru and France, the Office of the UN Secretary-General, and the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Korean Cities Agree to Hold Annual Forum on Sendai Framework [viewed]

unisdr_southkorea7 December 2015: An Annual Forum for Korean Cities was launched by 156 Korean municipalities in order to strengthen implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. The decision to launch this initiative happened during a City Resilience Summit taking place at the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) Global Education and Training Institute (GETI), in Incheon, Republic of Korea.

Event: Climate Action 2016 [viewed]

Announced at the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC, Climate Action 2016 will convene government, business and municipal leaders, civil society and academia to maintain momentum for multi-stakeholder climate implementation. This high-level gathering aims to complement and promote ongoing climate action on cities, land use, resilience, energy, transport, tools for decision makers, and finance. Organizing partners include: the World Bank; the Global Environment Facility (GEF); the Compact of Mayors; the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD); We Mean Business; and the University of Maryland.

SBI, SBSTA and ADP Conclude in Paris, Drafts Forwarded to COP [viewed]

cop215 December 2015: On 4 December, the SBI and SBSTA concluded their work, but three items remained unresolved: the 2013-2015 review; capacity building under the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol; and impact of the implementation of response measures. On 5 December 2015, the ADP closed its work, adopted its conclusions, and forwarded the draft agreement and draft decision to the COP.
