GEF CEO Stresses India's Role in 2015 Climate Agreement [viewed]

GEF19 December 2014: In an editorial written for the Hindu Business Line, Naoko Ishii, CEO and Chairperson of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), notes that India, as the world's third largest economy in purchasing power parity, will play a critical role in combating climate change. She writes that the most important building block of the 2015 Paris climate agreement will be the announcement of each country's intended nationally determined contribution (INDC) to reduce emissions, and that India's INDC will be closely scrutinized.

Event: Resilient Cities Asia 2015 [viewed]

Organized for the first time, Resilient Cities Asia 2015, taking place from 11-13 February 2015, in Bangkok, Thailand, will aim to become a key regional platform for urban resilience and climate change adaptation, providing innovative solutions for cities and local governments, currently facing related threats and challenges, that will help mainstream resilience considerations into policy and practice. The event builds on 'Resilient Cities - The Annual Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation,' held since 2010, in Bonn, Germany, and is organized by ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability.

Event: Workshop on Building Resilient Communities through Urban Planning and the Integration of Natural Sciences [viewed]

This workshop, jointly organized by the Committee on Housing and Land Management of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Programme on Assessment and Management of Geological and Climate Related Risk (CERG-C) of the University of Geneva, Switzerland, will focus on the integration of hazards, risks analysis and natural sciences into policy making for cities and human settlements of the most vulnerable countries of the UNECE region.

December 2014 Climate Finance Update [viewed]

Climate Finance Update19 December 2014: During December 2014, finance for climate change mitigation and adaptation projects was announced by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the World Bank. Germany, Norway and the UK also reported on funding for projects to be undertaken in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF), the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), the GEF and IDB released climate-related publications.

Event: CODATU XVI Conference [viewed]

This meeting will focus on ‘Energy, Climate and Air Quality Challenges: The Role of Urban Transport Policies in Developing Countries and Emerging Economies'. The conference will include plenary sessions on, inter alia; mitigation actions taken by cities; urban transport and climate change; financing for and optimizing benefits from low-carbon transport; and commitments and initiatives on the way to COP 21 of the UNFCCC in Paris, France. The conference is being organized by Cooperation for Urban Mobility in the Developing World (CODATU). Participants will also learn about, through field visits, Istanbul's public transport system, the Istanbul metro and a bike sharing programme.

African Sustainable Transport Forum Outcome Document Released [viewed]

astf15 December 2014: Following the inaugural conference of the African Sustainable Transport Forum (ASTF), an outcome document has been published that summarizes the ASTF's ministerial session and the ASTF Action Framework. The Framework includes 13 actions and an institutional structure for the ASTF Secretariat. It also presents a roadmap for sustainable transport in Africa, based on a harmonization of priority action areas identified by conference participants.

ECLAC Warns Against Increasing Climate Change Impacts in LAC [viewed]

ECLAC10 December 2014: A report, published by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), warns that climate change impacts in the region are already significant and will likely become more intense in the future. The report, titled ‘The economics of climate change in Latin America and the Caribbean: Paradoxes and challenges of sustainable development,' was presented during the UN Climate Change Conference in Lima, Peru, in December 2014.

COP President Launches Nazca Climate Action Portal [viewed]

nazca11 December 2014: The Government of Peru has launched the Non-state Actor Zone for Climate Action (Nazca) Climate Action Portal to increase the visibility of climate actions being undertaken by cities, regions, companies and investors. The portal was developed with the support of the UNFCCC Secretariat and launched on the sidelines of the Lima Climate Change Conference.
