World Bank Highlights Water-Related Disasters in the MENA Region [viewed]

World Bank21 March 2014: The World Bank has released a report, titled ‘Natural Disasters in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA): A Regional Overview,' which highlights disaster risk management (DRM) and the World Bank's response in the region. The report identifies urbanization and associated increased flood risk, water scarcity and impacts of climate change as the main challenges facing the region.

IPU Adopts Resolution on Risk Resilient Development [viewed]

Ipu21 March 2014: The 130th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) concluded with the adoption of a resolution on risk resilient development, which: underscores that “reducing disaster risk and protecting people's lives are the legal responsibility of all public representatives;” and urges members to enhance their oversight role and “take immediate action to review existing legislation related to disaster risk reduction (DRR).”

CARIAA Targeting Research on Climate Change Adaptation in Africa and Asia [viewed]

cariaa7 March 2014: The Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia (CARIAA) has launched a research programme on climate change adaptation that is to be conducted by four consortia. The research will focus on three climate change “hotspots”—sensitive regions inhabited by large numbers of people: semi-arid regions; deltas; and glacier and snowpack-dependent river basins.

UN-HABITAT4 March 2014: Cities are key battlegrounds in global efforts to achieve a sustainable future, according to ‘The City We Need,' a booklet launched by the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) on 4 March 2014, at UN Headquarters in New York, US. The booklet sets out a vision of the 21st century city, recommends nine principles for achieving sustainable urban development, and proposes a policy and legislative framework for a new urban paradigm.
