UNFCCC Publishes Parties' Submissions on REDD+ [viewed]

UNFCCCApril 2014: The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has posted submissions from Parties on “methodological guidance for activities relating to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries." The views presented from Parties are on: methodological guidance for non-market-based approaches related to the implementation of the activities referred to in decision 1/CP.16, paragraph 70; and the issues referred to in decision 1/CP.18, paragraph 40.

UNESCO Launches Ocean Acidification Website [viewed]

Unesco1 April 2014: Ocean acidification impacts are occurring across the globe, from small islands to large continents and from the tropics to the poles, according to the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). UNESCO and its partners have launched a website that brings together information on ocean acidification, which is also described as the "other carbon dioxide problem."

Event: 2014 CIF Partnership Forum [viewed]

The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) are jointly convening the 2014 CIF Partnership Forum, hosting more than 400 participants from civil society, the private sector, governments, indigenous peoples and academia. A special pre-conference event on 22 June, 'Stakeholder Day,' will be dedicated to discussing progress and challenges in engaging key stakeholders in the CIF's activities. During the conference, panels will address a variety of topics including managing climate change programs and unlocking private finance from mini-grids to REDD+. The CIF is the world's largest group of funds for climate action, channeling $8 billion to low carbon and climate resilient development. On 25 June, a field trip will take place.

UN Secretary-General Visits Greenland, Underscores Climate Impacts [viewed]

United Nations26 March 2014: On a visit to Uummannaq, Greenland, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon observed firsthand the consequences of climate change. Accompanied by Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt of Denmark and Premier Aleqa Hammond of Greenland, Ban expressed his alarm at how quickly the ice sheets covering Greenland have been melting.

UNDP Calls for Inputs on Draft Social and Environmental Standards [viewed]

UNDP3 March 2014: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has announced an invitation to provide comments on its draft Social and Environmental Standards (SESs), which underpin UNDP's commitment to mainstreaming social and environmental sustainability in its programmes and projects. The Standards aim to: strengthen UNDP's social and environmental outcomes; minimize and manage adverse impacts when avoidance is not possible; and strengthen capacities for managing social and environmental risks.

ITPGR Launches Third Call for Proposals Under Benefit-sharing Fund [viewed]

The focus of the call is to provide financial resources for targeted projects that support farmers' activities for climate change adaptation, as well as the co-development and transfer of technologies.

Event: Joint Meeting of the Adaptation Committee and the Nairobi Work Programme [viewed]

This joint meeting of the Adaptation Committee and the Nairobi work programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change (NWP), titled 'Available tools for the use of indigenous and traditional knowledge and practices for adaptation, needs of local and indigenous communities, and the application of gender-sensitive approaches and tools for adaptation,' will seek to address questions related to these two themes. On indigenous and traditional knowledge, the meeting will address: best practices, trends, needs and limitations in the use of indigenous, traditional and local knowledge and practices; collecting, evaluating and disseminating such knowledge and practices for use by local, national and international adaptation practitioners; integrating such knowledge and practices with scientific knowledge in adaptation planning and implementation; and effectively engaging holders of indigenous, traditional and local knowledge and practices in the adaptation process. Regarding gender‐sensitive approaches and tools, the meeting will explore, inter alia: existing gender‐sensitive tools and approaches that can enhance understanding and assess impacts, vulnerability and adaptation; and how to integrate such approaches and tools across adaptation processes and ensure that adaptation initiatives are gender sensitive.
