16 October 2009: During a conference on “Environment, Climate Change and Security – Facing the Challenges,” which took place in Stockholm, Sweden, on 15 October 2009, and was organized by the Swedish Presidency of the European Union (EU), Swedish State Secretary Joakim Stymne identified six areas for urgent action concerning the security risks posed by climate change.
14 October 2009: The UN Population Fund (UNFPA), together with the Women's Environment and Development Organization (WEDO), has launched a resource kit on climate change connections, focusing on gender and population and advocating that women are uniquely positioned as innovators, educators, caretakers, leaders and agents of change to address the risks of a changing climate.
October 2009: Bioversity International's Platform for Agrobiodiversity Research project on climate change is collecting information about initiatives on adaptation to climate change based on the use of agrobiodiversity.
7 October 2009: The President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Kanayo Nwanze, attended the IMF/World Bank annual meeting held from 6-7 October 2009, in Istanbul, Turkey, to underscore the pivotal role of smallholder agriculture in addressing climate change, food security and poverty.
September 2009: The UN-REDD Programme published the second issue of its newsletter, featuring news on the UN high-level event on forests and climate change, a commentary on REDD and indigenous peoples' engagement in Africa, and reports on a technical meeting on forest degradation and a measuring, reporting and verification meeting, both held in September 2009, in Rome, Italy.
24 September 2009: In a message to the high-level event on “Peace and Security through Women's Leadership: Acting on 1325 and Climate Change,” organized in New York by Finland and Liberia, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on UN member States to give women a greater say in addressing climate change challenges as equal partners in global discussions.
September 2009: The United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) Traditional Knowledge Initiative has recently re-launched the REDD Site, part of a pilot project on promoting the effective participation of indigenous peoples in processes for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD).
22 September 2009: The AOSIS Climate Change Summit was held in New York, on 21 September 2009, to set a course for AOSIS negotiators in the final months of talks on a post-2012 agreement.
21 September 2009: Vulnerable Group Development is a joint programme between the World Food Programme (WFP), the Government of Bangladesh and local NGOs, which provides monthly rations of flour and “life-skills” training to vulnerable women primarily in disaster-prone areas.
19 September 2009: The first “Global Climate Week” was launched on 19 September 2009, in Hamburg, Germany, initiating a week of synchronised activity around the world to encourage urgent action to combat climate change. Global Climate Week officially runs from 21-25 September 2009, involving activities by corporations, community groups and individuals around the world. It coincides with the Summit on Climate Change that UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will host on 22 September 2009, at UN Headquarters in New York, US.
