UNPFII Considers Reports on Climate Change Policies [viewed]

26 April 2010: The Ninth Session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) is taking place in New York, US, from 19-30 April 2010, around the theme “Development with Culture and Identity.” In his opening statement, Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General, underlined that indigenous cultures, languages and ways of life are under constant threat from climate change, armed conflict, lack of educational opportunities and discrimination.

UN Humanitarian Chief and WFP Focus on West African Food Crisis [viewed]

26 April 2010: UN World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Josette Sheeran has indicated that the intense droughts in Niger are escalating the humanitarian crisis and contributing to mass migration from rural to urban areas as well as to neighboring countries. She has announced that WFP will step up its aid to support 2.3 million people, particularly pregnant women and children, in the arid eastern Sahel region.

CBD Publishes April e-Newsletter on REDD+ and Biodiversity [viewed]

22 April 2010: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has published its ninth volume of the "REDD-plus & Biodiversity e-Newsletter." Aiming to inform CBD national focal points and partners about biodiversity aspects related to reducing emission from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, conservation, sustainable forest management and enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+), this volume highlights a new collaboration between the CBD and the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), and several projects and publications related to REDD+.

Event: Second Africa Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction [viewed]

This meeting is being organized by the African Union Commission, the Government of Kenya and the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), in collaboration with the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) of the World Bank. This conference will be held parallel to the First Conference of Ministers responsible for meteorology in Africa, organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in conjunction with the African Union Commission.

The conference on disaster risk reduction and its technical segment will aim to: discuss and adopt the extended Programme of Action for the Implementation of the Africa Regional Strategy for disaster risk reduction (2006-2015); define a regional mechanism and the resources to coordinate, support and monitor the implementation of the Africa Strategy and Programme of Action for disaster risk reduction (2006-2010); and link the outcomes of UNFCCC COP 15 to the extended Programme of Action for the Implementation of the Africa Regional Strategy for disaster risk reduction (2006-2015).
