24 March 2010: The European Environment Agency (EEA) released its annual publication "Signals," which focuses on "Biodiversity, Climate Change and you." This year's issue was drafted in support of the International Year of Biodiversity.
26 March 2010: The UN-REDD Programme Policy Board met for its fourth meeting from 18-19 March 2010, in Nairobi, Kenya, and approved US$14.7 million in funding for national UN-REDD programmes in Bolivia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. This decision brings the total amount of funding for UN-REDD national programmes to US$48.3 million.
18 March 2010: The UN-REDD Programme has released its inaugural Year in Review report for 2009, which reflects on the Programme's first full year in operation. The report highlights the progress of its pilot countries, the partnerships it cultivated with international partners throughout the year, and the Programme's impact in building international consensus for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, including conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+).
22 March 2010: To mark World Water Day, the UN General Assembly held a High-Level Dialogue on the implementation of the International Decade for Action on “Water for Life” 2005-2015, and the realization of the internationally agreed water-related development goals. The Dialogue was held on 22 March 2010, and was organized around panels on: Water and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); Water, Climate Change and Disasters; and Water and Peace and Security.
16 March 2010: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has supported a study titled “Indigenous Lands, Protected Areas, and Slowing Climate Change,” which was published in PLoS Biology. The study involved scientists from 13 different organizations and research institutions, and finds that forest protection offers one of the most effective, practical and immediate strategies to combat climate change.
The World Youth Conference 2010 – organized by the Government of Mexico in partnership with the United Nations system and civil society organizations – aims to bring together government representatives and civil society organizations to identify priorities of action on youth, and youth policies, to be addressed before the deadline set by the international community to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
20 March 2010: On the sidelines of its annual meeting, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) held a seminar in Cancun, Mexico, on "The Route to Mexico: Challenges and Opportunities for a Global Agreement."
The objectives of this Conference are to: analyze the structural and systemic causes that drive climate change and propose measures to ensure the well-being of all humanity in harmony with nature; discuss and agree on the project of a Universal Declaration of Mother Earth Rights; agree on proposals for new commitments to the Kyoto Protocol and projects for a COP Decision under the UNFCCC to address climate debt, climate change migrants-refugees, emission reductions, adaptation, technology transfer, finance, forests, a shared vision, and indigenous peoples; work on the organization of the World People's Referendum on Climate Change; analyze and develop an action plan to advance the establishment of a Climate Justice Tribunal; and define strategies for action and mobilization to defend life from Climate Change and to defend the Rights of Mother Earth.
16 March 2010: The Human Rights Council Advisory Committee presented a "Preliminary study on discrimination in the context of the right to food" (A/HRC/13/32) for consideration by the 13th session of the UN Human Rights Council, which is meeting from 1-26 March 2010, in Geneva, Switzerland.
8 March 2010: To mark International Women's Day, UN officials stressed the need for greater empowerment of women in order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015 and to face development challenges, including climate change.
