The People's World Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth convened in Cochabamba, Bolivia, from 19-22 April 2010.
20 April 2010: The seventh edition of the UN-REDD Programme's Newsletter reviews activities related to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) in several countries, and includes reports, analyses, and commentaries on recent events and publications.
March 2010: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), a member organization of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), has published a book titled "Realizing REDD+: National Strategy and Policy Options." The book draws lessons from national experiences to inform strategies and policies for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, conservation, sustainable forest management and enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+).
7 April 2010: The latest issue of the Traditional Knowledge Bulletin, published by the Traditional Knowledge Initiative of the UN University-Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU IAS), features an article that analyzes of the outcome of the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 15) and the potential priorities for indigenous peoples in 2010.
This meeting is being organized by the African Union Commission, the Government of Kenya and the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), in collaboration with the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) of the World Bank. This conference will be held parallel to the First Conference of Ministers responsible for meteorology in Africa, organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in conjunction with the African Union Commission.
The conference on disaster risk reduction and its technical segment will aim to: discuss and adopt the extended Programme of Action for the Implementation of the Africa Regional Strategy for disaster risk reduction (2006-2015); define a regional mechanism and the resources to coordinate, support and monitor the implementation of the Africa Strategy and Programme of Action for disaster risk reduction (2006-2010); and link the outcomes of UNFCCC COP 15 to the extended Programme of Action for the Implementation of the Africa Regional Strategy for disaster risk reduction (2006-2015).
25 March 2010: The 13th session of the UN Human Rights Council, which met from 1-26 March 2010, in Geneva, Switzerland, concluded with the adoption of 28 resolutions, including one on the organization of the Social Forum (A/HRC/13/L.16).
1 April 2010: The implementation of UN-REDD activities in Indonesia was officially launched at the UN-REDD Inception Workshop, held from 30-31 March 2010, in Jakarta, Indonesia. Representatives of various ministries, provincial governments, and international and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) discussed reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD) in Indonesia and the UN Programme's activities.
The fifth World Urban Forum (WUF-5), which took place from 22-26 March 2010, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, under the theme “The Right to the City: Bridging the Urban Divide,” was hosted by the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the Government of Brazil.
The Fourth High-level Dialogue of the General Assembly on Financing for Development (FfD) concluded with several references to the role of the combat of climate change in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
22 March 2010: The Permanent Representative of Mexico to the UN has addressed a letter to the President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) dated 8 March 2010, which contains theDeclaration of Support for the Yasuní-Itt Initiative. The Declaration was adopted at the first Latin American and Caribbean Unity Summit, held in the Mayan Riviera, Mexico, on 22-23 February 2010. The letter and annex will be circulated as a document of the General Assembly, under agenda item 53 (d) (Sustainable development: protection of global climate for present and future generations).
