31 October 2011: The UN System Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB) has issued a common statement on the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), following the CEB's biannual meeting and retreat. The statement underscores that eradicating poverty and promoting sustainable development "must start with the recognition that the world has changed in fundamental ways."

13 October 2011: The World Bank's Nepal Biogas Program has successfully generated 92,000 Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) from biogas projects, with added benefits in terms of social development and health.
October 2011: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has released a report titled "Building Island Resilience," which provides an overview of the activities of the SIDS Platform, UNESCO's house-wide contribution to implementation of the Mauritius Strategy for the further implementation (MSI) of the Barbados Programme of Action (BPoA) for the Sustainable Development of small island developing States (SIDS).
20 October 2011: The Rio Conventions Pavilion was organized during the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), to showcase actions to stop land degradation and save biodiversity while meeting the challenges of climate change.
18 October 2011: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on countries of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) to continue tackling the world's most looming issues and work together to ensure the prosperity of future generations, when addressing for the first time the UNECE Executive Committee.
17 October 2011: At its seventh Policy Board Meeting, the UN-REDD Programme approved US$4 million to fund Nigeria's National Programme for REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks).
17 October 2011: During an official visit to Switzerland, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon discussed climate change and sustainable development issues with government officials, highlighting crucial upcoming meetings in each area.
17 October 2011: This year's commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty promoted recognition that a sustainable future is not reachable when over 40% of the world's population, about 2.6 billion people, live in poverty and face threats from natural disasters and economic shocks.
