International Polar Year 2012 Conference Discusses Moving from Knowledge to Action [viewed]

27 April 2012: The International Polar Year (IPY) 2012 Conference convened around the theme “From Knowledge to Action,” with discussions on a variety of issues related to Arctic issues. Panel sessions addressed, inter alia: Earth structure and geodynamics; polar ocean processes; permafrost; marine, territorial and freshwater polar ecosystems; and communicating polar science.

Event: International Polar Year (IPY) 2012 Conference [viewed]

The International Polar Year (IPY) 2012 Conference draws international attention to the polar regions, global change, and related environmental, social and economic issues. Organized around the theme "From Knowledge to Action," the event brings together over 2,000 Arctic and Antarctic researchers, policy- and decision-makers, and a broad range of interested parties from academia, industry, NGO, education and circumpolar communities including indigenous peoples. The conference seeks to build on the momentum of IPY 2007-2008, which increased understanding of how indigenous knowledge could be combined with instrumented data in monitoring the changes in polar ice, snow and vegetation cover, marine and terrestrial animal migrations, and behavioral patterns of polar animals, birds, fish and cetacean species.

FIP Pilot Country Meeting Evaluates REDD+ Initiatives [viewed]

23 April 2012: The third meeting of pilot countries participating in the Forest Investment Program (FIP) addressed: developing innovative approaches to invest in reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks (REDD+); working with the private sector, indigenous peoples and local communities; and sharing views on the design and implementation of systems to monitor REDD+ investment results.

World Bank, IMF Report on MDGs Progress [viewed]

April 2012: The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have published the 2012 Global Monitoring Report (GMR) on progress in meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This year's edition, titled “Food Prices, Nutrition, and the Millennium Development Goals,” highlights the need to help developing countries deal with the harmful effects of higher and more volatile food prices.

Sixth Community-Based Adaptation Conference Focuses on Communication [viewed]

22 April 2012: The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) Sixth International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation (CBA6) brought stakeholders and practitioners together to discuss community-based adaptation (CBA) planning and practices. The conference focused on communicating how communities are adapting to climate change, and addressed the following themes: scaling-up CBA; water resources; biodiversity and forests; coastal zones; health; disaster risk reduction (DRR); and vulnerable communities, including indigenous people.

FAO Releases Asia-Pacific Forestry Briefs [viewed]

FAOApril 2012: Policy briefs resulting from the second Asia-Pacific Forestry Sector Outlook Study (APFSOS II) highlight concerns with biodiversity loss in the region, a need for improved governance and better forest management at the field level, and a call for enhanced training and awareness of forestry issues. Ministers Adopt Andean Environment Agenda, Water Resources Management Action Plan [viewed]

11 April 2012: The Andean Community (CAN) has approved the Andean Environmental Agenda (known by its Spanish acronym AAA) for the period 2012-2016, outlining common actions and capacity-building measures regarding climate change, biodiversity and water resources for Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, and the Action Plan for implementing CAN's Andean Strategy for Integrated Management of Water Resources (known by its Spanish acronym GIRH).
