6 December 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) GRID Arendal has released a report titled “Women at the Frontline of Climate Change: Gender Risks and Hopes.” Released on the sidelines of the Durban Climate Change Conference, the report states that investing in low carbon, green technologies can strengthen climate change adaptation and improve women's livelihoods.
4 December 2011: Mountain Day 2011 highlighted the critical role that mountain ecosystems play in climate adaptation and sustainable development, as well as the vulnerability of mountains and those who depend on them to climate change.
22 November 2011: At their XI meeting in Manaus, Brazil, the Foreign Ministers of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) countries adopted a declaration to be forwarded to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) and a "Manaus Commitment" pledging new actions for ACTO cooperation.
November 2011: The latest issue of the Poverty in Focus magazine, published by the International Policy Centre (IPC) of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), looks at the inter-related dimensions of growth, gender, poverty and environment, including climate change mitigation and adaptation related issues.
23 November 2011: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has published the eighth issue of “Making It” magazine. The theme of this issue, titled "We can do it!”, is about gender equality and the economic empowerment of women.
17 November 2011: Speaking at a news conference in Indonesia, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon stated that, while REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks) is a win-win-win situation for local communities, Indonesia and the world, it is no substitute for deep greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions in developed countries.
November 2011: The Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF), hosted at the World Bank, has released its annual report for the fiscal year 2011. The report highlights strengths and weaknesses of the Facility to date.
11 November 2011: Available for peer-review, a draft study circulated by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) compiles and synthesizes available scientific information on the possible impacts of geo-engineering techniques on biodiversity, including preliminary information on associated social, economic and cultural considerations. Comments are being accepted until 9 December 2011.
11 November 2011: The Asia-Pacific Forestry Week 2011 brought together around 1500 people to discuss forests and forestry in Asia and the Pacific. The event was organized under the theme "New Challenges, New Opportunities," and participants discussed governance, communication and the future of the region's forests.
This workshop is organized by the UN University (UNU), in collaboration with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Australian Government Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the UN Development Programme (UNDP). The workshop aims to: reflect the range of perspectives concerning indigenous peoples/local communities and climate change responses (including mitigation); support the build-up of understanding and peer-reviewed literature in the field of indigenous peoples, local communities and climate change mitigation; compile data and grey literature that are relevant for understanding climate change mitigation involving local and indigenous knowledge holders, local populations, and developing country scientists; support Indigenous peoples', local communities' and developing country scientists' engagement and research in international climate dialogues; provide policy makers with relevant information on the mitigation potential of indigenous peoples and local communities; and outline a publication in a Special Issue of a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
