UN Officials Urge Parliamentarian Support for SDGs, Climate Agreement [viewed]

Ipu31 August 2015: Addressing the Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on parliamentarians to help advance the post-2015 development agenda and ensure an equal footing for civil society in its implementation. He stressed parliamentarians' role in ensuring the agenda is “translated from the global to the national,” and that implementing and monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will require strong and close partnership between states and civil society.

Event: Conference on Global Leadership in the Arctic: Cooperation, Innovation, Engagement and Resilience (GLACIER) [viewed]

The US Department of State is hosting the Conference on Global Leadership in the Arctic: Cooperation, Innovation, Engagement and Resilience (GLACIER) to highlight the most urgent issues facing the Arctic, as well as innovative approaches at the local, national and international levels to addressing the region's challenges. Foreign ministers and other key stakeholders will gather at the conference to define the most crucial challenges and to raise awareness about climate change impacts in the Arctic. Representatives from Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, India, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, the Russian Federation, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, the UK and the EU have been invited to participate in GLACIER, alongside policymakers, indigenous leaders, and public and private sector representatives from Alaska and the Arctic region. US President Barack Obama is expected to address the conference. Along with plenaries, a social media blitz, and outside events leading up to, during and after GLACIER, parallel panel sessions during the conference will address: climate change in the Arctic and beyond; strengthening emergency response; preventing unregulated Arctic high seas fisheries; renewable energy; science cooperation; and household innovations that promote economic efficiency and community health.

IRENA, C2E2 Measure Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Synergies [viewed]

IRENA11 August 2015: Combining energy efficiency and renewable energy can reduce global primary energy demand by 25% by 2030, compared to business as usual, according to a working paper published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Copenhagen Centre on Energy Efficiency (C2E2). According to the study, energy efficiency measures would account for 50-75% of these savings.

2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Being Prepared for UNGA Consideration [viewed]

post20152 August 2015: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was adopted at the conclusion of the post-2015 development agenda negotiations on 2 August 2015, contains five sections, including the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets proposed by the Open Working Group (OWG) in 2014, with several revisions for specificity and consistency with international ambition. The document for consideration by the 69th UN General Assembly (UNGA) is expected to be finalized and made available ahead of the UN summit for the adoption of the agenda, which will take place from 25-27 September 2015.

Event: GEO-XII Plenary and Mexico City Ministerial Summit [viewed]

The twelfth Plenary Session of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO-XII) will convene from 11-12 November 2015, followed by the GEO 2015 Mexico City Ministerial Summit, which will take place on 13 November. Side events will take place from 9-12 November. The GEO-XII Plenary Session will meet at the Hilton Reforma on 11 November and at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores - SRE) on 12 November. Caucus Meetings and the Executive Committee Meeting and GEO Side Events will also take place throughout the week, and a GEO exhibit will be on display.
