World Bank Analyzes Economic, Health Benefits of Climate-Smart Policies [viewed]

World Bank23 June 2014: The World Bank, in partnership with the ClimateWorks Foundation, has released an analysis that estimates global economic output could increase by US$1.8 trillion annually through government policies that encourage energy efficiency and improve public transport. The report finds that such policies could save over one million lives, reduce crop losses by 1-1.5 million tons, and avoid 355 to 520 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent emissions.

IRENA Launches Renewable Energy Roadmap Toward 2030 [viewed]

IRENA6 June 2014: The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) launched a report outlining what can be done to double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix by the year 2030, based on studies of renewable energy potential in 26 countries. The report states that this target is cost-effective and within reach, and that achieving it will reduce pollution, alleviate adverse health impacts of fossil fuel use, increase energy security, and create almost one million jobs.

G7 Declaration Highlights Energy Security, Climate Change, Sustainable Development [viewed]

g7-eu5 June 2014: The Presidents of the European Council and European Commission (EC) have gathered with leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US for a G7 Summit, during which they discussed issues related to Ukraine and global foreign policy issues, as well as energy, climate, economy and development, among others. The resulting Brussels G7 Summit Declaration addresses each of these issues and affirms the G7's commitment to “the values of freedom and democracy, and their universality and to fostering peace and security.”

May 2014 Water Finance Update [viewed]

ebrd-worldbank-adb-gef-eib-afdbMay 2014: During May, international and regional financial institutions, including the World Bank, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), undertook a variety of actions related to water resources, including presenting the results of existing projects, participating in regional conferences and approving new loans. Projects this month addressed issues including transboundary water cooperation, water supply and sanitation, hydroelectric generation, disaster risk reduction (DRR) and ecosystem service conservation, among others.
