UNECE Meeting on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution Amends Gothenburg Protocol [viewed]

UNECE4 May 2012: The 30th Session of the Executive Body for the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP) adopted amendments to the 1999 Gothenburg Protocol to Abate Acidification, Eutrophication and Ground-level Ozone (Gothenburg Protocol). The amendments include national emission reduction commitments to be achieved by 2020 and beyond, and address, for the first time, particulate matter, including black carbon, a short-lived climate forcer.

SBSTTA 16 Adopts Recommendations on Marine and Coastal Biodiversity, Biodiversity and Climate Change [viewed]

It also addressed the Intergovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), and in-depth review of the work programme on island biodiversity (PoWIB), inter alia.

European Environment Agency Models Predict Climate Change Impacts [viewed]

3 May 2012: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released a series of maps produced using Eye on Earth, which predict climate change impacts in Europe through 2100. Based on projections from the ENSEMBLES project, Europe will be, on average, 1.5°C warmer from 2021-2050 than it was from 1960-1990, and the temperature increase will average 3°C between 2071-2100, with the highest warming in Eastern Scandinavia, and South and South-East Europe.

International Polar Year 2012 Conference Discusses Moving from Knowledge to Action [viewed]

27 April 2012: The International Polar Year (IPY) 2012 Conference convened around the theme “From Knowledge to Action,” with discussions on a variety of issues related to Arctic issues. Panel sessions addressed, inter alia: Earth structure and geodynamics; polar ocean processes; permafrost; marine, territorial and freshwater polar ecosystems; and communicating polar science.

Climate and Clean Air Coalition Welcomes New Partners [viewed]

24 April 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced that the first meeting of the working group and the High Level Assembly of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition welcomed new parties to the Coalition, agreed on five initiatives for rapid implementation, and established a Trust Fund managed by the UNEP-hosted Secretariat.

ILO, Munich RE Foundation Highlight Innovations in Microinsurance [viewed]

ILO10 April 2012: The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Munich RE Foundation have released the second volume of "Microinsurance Compendium, Protecting the Poor," which highlights that the number of microinsured people has reached almost 500 million. World Bank, IMF Report on MDGs Progress [viewed]
