13 October 2011: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Deputy Executive Director Amina Mohamed addressed the 2011 Urban Environmental Accords (UEA) Gwangju Summit, which convened under the theme of “Green Cities, Better Cities.”
10 October 2011: Stressing the finite water resources of Pacific small island developing States (SIDS), the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has stressed the need put in place comprehensive risk reduction measures to reduce their vulnerability to climate change.
6 October 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) announced that it has joined the 7 Billion Actions Campaign, coordinated by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), to encourage individuals, governments, businesses and organizations to take actions to create a more sustainable world for seven billion inhabitants.
30 September 2011: The 51st Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) adopted a new strategy and action plan on climate change drafted by the PAHO Secretariat. These documents call on countries in the Americas to develop national climate change strategies with technical help from PAHO and the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as national campaigns to increase awareness of the health risks of climate change.
2 October 2011: The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a report on gender, climate change and health, which is based on the recognition that the effects of climate on human society, and our ability to mitigate and adapt to them, are mediated by social factors, including gender.
29 September 2011: The Expert Group Meeting on Sustainable Energy Development in Asia and the Pacific reviewed energy security challenges facing the region and outlined a regional agenda on the issue. Participants stressed the importance for countries in the region to have national policies that will ensure universal access to clean and efficient energy services to advance poverty reduction and improve health and well-being.
23 September 2011: The seventh “Environment for Europe” Ministerial Conference concluded with the adoption of a Ministerial Declaration titled “Save water, grow green!” Through the Declaration, ministers agree to take the lead in the transition to a green economy and to make substantive contributions to the discussions on green economy within the context of sustainable development, poverty alleviation and the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
22 September 2011: In his statement delivered at the lunch meeting of Iberoamerican Foreign Ministers in New York, US, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underlined that advancing economic growth, lifting people out of poverty and protecting the environment are interlinked, "one and the same cause."
16 September 2011: The UN Secretary-General has launched the annual report prepared by the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Gap Task Force, titled "The Global Partnership for Development: Time to Deliver." This report assesses the current state of the global partnership to meet the MDGs, and includes a section on access to technology and funding to address climate change.
