Event: 65th Session of the WMO Executive Council Session [viewed]

The 65th Session of the Executive Council (EC-65) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) will meet from 15-23 May 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland. The Session is expected to discuss reports, the Global Framework for Climate Services, implementation of the WMO Strategic Plan 2012-2015, resource management, communications and public affairs, and legal matters, among other things. On partnerships, the EC will hear reports on, inter alia: GFCS partnerships; WMO participation in the work of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and Convention on Biodiversity (CBD); WMO involvement in UN Water, in particular in the framework of the International Year of Water Cooperation; developments in establishing new working arrangements with the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme; Report of the Chair of the IPCC; Report on GEO cooperation with WMO; Future Earth Research initiative (ICSU); and MoUs between WMO and relevant international organizations established since EC-64.

Event: International Conference on Plant Genetic Resources, Food Security and Climate Change, and Third High-level Roundtable on the ITPGR [viewed]

The Third High-level Roundtable on the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) is organized under the patronship of the Government of Indonesia in the context of the International Conference on Plant Genetic Resources, Food Security and Climate Change. The High-level Roundtable will focus on the policy contribution of the Treaty to cope with global challenges related to biodiversity, climate change and food security.

Event: Inaugural Meeting of High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development [viewed]

The inaugural meeting of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) will take place on 24 September 2013. This will be the first formal meeting of the HLPF since a decision was taken to establish the forum at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20) in June 2012. The HLPF aims to follow up on the implementation of sustainable development, and to build on the strengths, experiences, resources and inclusive participation modalities of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD), and to replace the Commission. UN-REDD Highlights Key National Legal Issues for REDD+ [viewed]

unredd30 April 2013: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) has released a publication, titled ‘Legal Analysis of Cross-cutting Issues for REDD+ Implementation: Lessons Learned from Mexico, Viet Nam and Zambia.' The purpose of the report is to identify key legal issues impacting REDD+ and highlight lessons learned and messages from legal reform and development in the case study countries.

Commonwealth Leaders of Micro-States Discuss Challenges in Delivering Sustainable Development [viewed]

CommonWealth Secretariat26 April 2013: The Commonwealth Secretariat hosted representatives of very small States in a meeting on the specific challenges that micro-States face in delivering sustainable development. Discussions focused on governance, policy and public administration in micro-States.

UNFCCC Publishes Views on REDD+ [viewed]

UNFCCC26 April 2013: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a compilation of 11 views presented by parties (FCCC/SB/2013/MISC.3) on issues related to activities described in paragraph 70 of decision 1/CP.16 (Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries- REDD+). Three submissions from NGOs were posted on the UNFCCC website.

Parliamentarian-CSO Forum Adopts Third Asia-Pacific Declaration on MDGs, Post-2015 Agenda [viewed]

adppdApril 2013: The “Asia and the Pacific Parliamentarian and Civil Society Organization (CSO) Forum on Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Acceleration and the Post-2015 Development Agenda” resulted in a Bali Declaration on accelerating the MDGs and the post-2015 development agenda. It asserts that the post-2015 framework should be based on: human rights, democracy and good governance; equality and non-discrimination; sustainable development; and quality public service delivery.

UNFCCC Reports on Efficiency Gains Achieved in 2012 [viewed]

UNFCCC24 April 2013: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released an information note on efficiency gains achieved by the end of 2012 (FCCC/SBI/2013/INF.5). The document describes measures adopted by the Secretariat with the objective of achieving sustainable efficiency gains and providing examples of cost savings.

ECOSOC, BWIs Discuss Coordination to Advance Post-2015 Agenda [viewed]

ECOSOC22 April 2013: A high-level meeting on "Coherence, coordination and cooperation in the context of financing for development and the post-2015 development agenda" brought together the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to discuss the global economic and financial crisis and its impact on financing for development.
