23 February 2012: The 35th session of the Governing Council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) focused on the contribution of sustainable smallholder agriculture to meeting global food needs while protecting the environment.
21 February 2012: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published a report titled “Energy Policies of IEA Countries – Denmark,” which highlights Denmark's long-term energy goal of becoming independent of fossil fuel use by 2050, but notes that challenges remain in implementing its ambitious goals.
6 February 2012: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published a report entitled “Energy Policies of IEA Countries – Slovak Republic Review,” which lauds Slovakia's efforts on energy efficiency, and notes the essential role of greater regional cooperation, particularly in gas and electricity interconnections, in enhancing energy security and market competition for the region as a whole.
Among other things, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government are due to consider the approval of CARICOM's Implementation Plan for the Regional Framework for Achieving Development Resilient to Climate Change.
January 2012: A Special Edition of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Newsletter highlights the results of three events related to the future of sustainable energy use – the Pacific Leader's Meeting, the Second Assembly of IRENA, and the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) – all of which focused on renewable energy strategies at regional and international levels.
16 February 2012: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and Asian Development Bank (ADB) have released a report asserting that the challenges of resource constraints in the Asia-Pacific region are more serious than anywhere else, and proposing strategies for changing economic incentives to promote a green economy. The report was prepared as part of preparations for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
This meeting is the inaugural meeting of the Congress on Water, Climate and Energy, and participants will explore the topics of resilient and sustainable cities with a focus on climate change adaptation and mitigation. The meeting will further examine how to incorporate climate change adaptation and uncertainty into the city vision and infrastructure, and will include solutions such as the role of regulation, technologies and smart networks. The meeting is organized by the International Water Association in partnership with the UN World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP), the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), and ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability.
8 February 2012: UN-Water has announced that Michel Jarraud, World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretary-General, and Albert Diphoorn, UN-Habitat Urban Basic Services Branch Coordinator, are taking up the positions as Chair and Vice-Chair, respectively, of UN-Water for a two-year term.
January 2012: Following the Indonesian Government's declaration in May 2011 of a two-year moratorium on new forest concession licences, the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has released a working paper examining the significance of this moratorium on forest governance.
The IFAD Executive Board is the Fund's second main Governing Body, consisting of 18 elected Members and 18 Alternate Members. The Executive Board has full authority to decide on the programme of work, approval of projects, programmes and grants and to adopt/recommend action, pending the final approval of the Governing Council, on matters related to policy, the annual administrative budget, applications for membership and staffing within the Fund.
