UNGA Debate Addresses Climate Change [viewed]

unga703 October 2015: During the general debate of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Heads of State and Government as well as Vice-Presidents, ministers and other high-level officials addressed climate change, among other issues. The statements to the UNGA, which were delivered from 28 September to 3 October 2015 in New York, US, tackled, inter alia: the 2015 agreement; the long-term global goal; climate finance; climate impacts and losses; and mitigation pledges. The general debate followed on the heels of the UN Sustainable Development Summit, during which the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted.

Loss and Damage Excom Convenes First Meeting [viewed]

UNFCCC26 September 2015: The Executive Committee (Excom) of the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage Associated with Climate Change Impacts (Warsaw International Mechanism or WIM) held its first meeting since the adoption of its initial two-year workplan in December 2014, at the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC in Lima, Peru, and the nomination of members in June 2015.

Second Committee Begins Session with Focus on 2030 Implementation [viewed]

unga707 October 2015: The UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Second Committee (Economic and Financial) opened its General Debate for the UNGA 70th Session. Member States focused on issues related to the implementation of the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (AAAA) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The General Debate is taking place on 7-9 October, and will be followed by a discussion of the Committee's working methods on 9 October.

New IPCC Chair Elected [viewed]

Hoesung_Lee7 October 2015: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has elected Hoesung Lee, Republic of Korea, as its new Chair. Lee was elected by 78 votes to 56 in a run-off with Jean-Pascal van Ypersele of Belgium. Speaking after the vote, Lee said he was "honored and grateful" to have been elected. He underscored the need for more information regarding existing options for preventing and adapting to climate change.

Second Our Ocean Conference6 October 2015: The Second Our Ocean Conference generated US$2.1 billion in commitments on oceans, including announcements of more than 80 initiatives on marine conservation and protection and the protection of over 1.9 million square kilometers of ocean. The Conference aimed to promote voluntary governmental and institutional commitments to care for the world's oceans.

APEC Adopts DRR Framework [viewed]

apec30 September 2015: Senior disaster management officials from the Asia-Pacific Economic Corporation (APEC) have introduced a collaborative platform for strengthening the resilience of Asia-Pacific economies, in light of the 'new normal' of increasing natural disaster threats due to climate change. The APEC Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) will guide policy coordination within and between APEC economies to combat the increasing frequency, magnitude and scope of disasters, which are endangering lives and economic stability.

Event: 34th Meetings of the CCAMLR and its Scientific Committee [viewed]

The 34th meetings of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and its Scientific Committee will convene in Hobart, Australia. The meeting is expected to address, among other issues: illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing; climate change; catch documentation scheme (CDS); vessel monitoring system (VMS); harvested species (krill, fish; fish and invertebrate by-catch); incidental mortality; spatial management and impacts on the Antarctic system; compliance with conservation measures in force; and compliance evaluation procedures.

ADP Co-Chairs Release Draft Negotiating Text for Paris Agreement [viewed]

UNFCCC5 October 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released three documents in advance of the October session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP): a Co-Chairs' non-paper containing a draft of the 2015 agreement (ADP.2015.8.InformalNote); a draft decision on ADP workstream 2 (pre-2020 ambition)(ADP.2015.9.InformalNote); and a scenario note by the Co-Chairs on the eleventh part of the second session of the ADP (ADP 2-11) (ADP.2015.7.InformalNote), which will convene from 19-23 October 2015 in Bonn Germany.

October Update on Doha Amendment Ratification [viewed]

UNFCCC5 October 2015: Since 18 August 2015, the UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that Algeria, Bhutan, Hungary, Madagascar, Panama, Samoa, Switzerland and Thailand have accepted the Doha Amendment, which formalizes commitments for the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol (2013-2020). These announcements bring the total number of Parties that have deposited their instruments of acceptance to 49.
