CDM Executive Board Launches Calls for Experts [viewed]

Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) 17 December 2008: The Executive Board of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) has announced four calls for experts, as agreed by the Board at its 44th meeting. The calls are for experts to replace the outgoing members of the CDM Methodologies Panel (Meth Panel), the CDM Afforestation/Reforestation Working Group (A/R WG), and the CDM Small-Scale Working Group (SSC WG), as well as for experts on: coal mine fires; iron and steel industries; adipic acid; production; transport; SF6; uncertainty; and landfill aeration.

UN Secretary-General: 2009 Will Be “The Year of Climate Change” [viewed]

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon 17 December 2008: In his last press conference for 2008, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned that the coming year promises to be as difficult as 2008, which he called “the year of multiple crises.” He added that 2009 will be “the year of climate change” and noted progress made in Poznań, Poland, at the UNFCCC conference.

UNFCCC Adaptation Fund Board Meets in Bonn [viewed]

COP/MOP decision on the Adaptation Fund 15 December 2008: The Adaptation Fund Board (AFB) is holding its fourth meeting from 15-17 December 2008, at the UN Campus in Bonn, Germany. The Adaptation Fund was established by the parties to the Kyoto Protocol of the UNFCCC to finance concrete adaptation projects and programmes in developing countries that are parties to the Kyoto Protocol. The Fund will be financed with 2% of the Certified Emission Reductions issued for projects of the Clean Development Mechanism and with funds from other sources.

UN Secretary-General Calls on Governments to Not Backslide on Previous Commitments [viewed]

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon 11 December 2008: In a press conference in Poznań, Poland, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted progress achieved at the climate change talks, but stressed that much more needs to be done. He called on governments not to “backslide” on previous commitments and emphasized the need for: deep cuts in emissions to stabilize our climate; assistance for developing countries in dealing with mitigation and adaptation; a dramatic increase of financial and technological resources; and institutions that can support these efforts.

UN Environment Management Group Discuss Climate Neutral UN [viewed]

10 December 2008: The 14th Senior Officials Meeting of the Environment Management Group (EMG) convened on 10 December 2008, in Poznań, Poland. Participants discussed: implementation of the 2007 commitment by the Chief Executives Board on moving towards a climate-neutral UN, including the development of a Climate Neutral Knowledge Management website that will document individual agency's greenhouse gas emissions and reductions; the cost implications and budgetary modalities of purchasing carbon offsets; and future EMG work, including a possible strategic process and the strategy for implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification and the 2010 biodiversity targets.
