EU and Member States Advance Paris Agreement Ratification [viewed]

EU - Hungary - France Flags15 June 2016: French President François Hollande signed, on 15 June, a bill formally ratifying the Paris Agreement on climate change. France, which held the Presidency of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 21) and helped usher in the Paris Agreement in December 2015, follows Hungary, which was the first EU member State to ratify, passing legislation unanimously in support of the Agreement on 24 May.

Member States Elect Peter Thomson, Fiji, as UNGA 71 President [viewed]

Fiji Flag13 June 2016: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) elected Peter Thomson, Permanent Representative of Fiji to the UN, as the President of the 71st session of the UNGA. Thomson will replace Mogens Lykketoft of Denmark, who is serving as the President of UNGA 70.

Europe Ministers Translate 2030 Agenda into Concrete Commitments on Green Economy, Clean Air, ESD [viewed]

efe810 June 2016: Participants at the Eighth Environment for Europe (EfE) Ministerial Conference adopted a Ministerial Declaration and agreed on a number of outcomes related to the green economy, air quality and human health, and education for sustainable development (ESD). During the Conference, the UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) launched the sixth Global Environmental Outlook (GEO-6) Assessment for the pan-European region.

GEF Council Marks 25th Anniversary, Approves Work Program for US$398.68 Million, CBIT Trust Fund [viewed]

gef509 June 2016: The 50th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council, which marked the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the GEF, approved a Work Program comprising 38 project concepts and four programmatic frameworks, with total resources amounting to US$398.68 million. In addition, the GEF Council established a new trust fund for the Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT), which was created in response to a request by the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties, as reflected in the decision adopting the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Event: 49th Session of the IOC Executive Council [viewed]

The 49th Session of UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission's (UNESCO-IOC) Executive Council will review the Commission's work plans within the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement on climate change, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and the SAMOA Pathway. The Council meets once per biennium.

US, India Reaffirm Support for Early Entry into Force of Paris Agreement [viewed]

us_india7 June 2016: During an official visit to the US, Indian Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi met with US President Barack Obama in the White House for their third major bilateral summit. The two leaders reviewed the deepening strategic partnership between the US and India and pledged to pursue new opportunities to, inter alia, bolster economic growth and sustainable development. The joint statement issued at the conclusion of their meeting addresses climate, clean energy, clean energy finance and sustainable development, among other issues.

Mission Innovation Countries to Double Clean Energy Investment by 2021 [viewed]

mi3 June 2016: The inaugural Mission Innovation Ministerial (MIM) took place in conjunction with the seventh Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM7), bringing together countries that have committed to increase their support for clean energy research and development, and providing an opportunity for individual countries to highlight plans and actions under MI and announce new collaborations. On 1 June, closed-door discussions for MI ministers and delegates were held, chaired by US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz. The latter stated that MI is critical to funding the basic scientific research and development that will underpin the advanced clean energy solutions needed to combat climate change in the 21st century, noting such technologies will help drive down adoption costs to grow low-carbon economies.

CEM7 Launches New Campaigns on Advanced Cooling, Corporate Sourcing of Renewables, Energy Management [viewed]

cem3 June 2016: The Seventh Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM7) took place from 1-2 June 2016 in San Francisco, California, US, in conjunction with the inaugural Mission Innovation (MI) Ministerial and chaired by US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz. Moniz noted that San Francisco was chosen as host city because of its role in innovative technology. On 1 June, the CEM met in closed-door discussions and, on 2 June, the CEM7's Open Press Public Private Action Summit convened.

unfccc_iea_ccafs_nama_wb6 June 2016: Addressing the Group of Seven (G7), UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres stated on 23 May, “Today, the challenge is to translate intent into action…that does justice to the extraordinary ambition enshrined in the Paris Agreement….” Figueres attended her final intersessional meeting of the UNFCCC subsidiary bodies from 16-26 May in Bonn, Germany, where an overarching theme of 'Accelerating Implementation of the Paris Agreement' pervaded many of the special events and negotiations.
