22 August 2008: A report commissioned by the UN Office for
the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and CARE International finds
that climate change greatly complicates, and could undermine, efforts to manage
the challenges presented by droughts, floods and cyclones. The study identifies
the most likely humanitarian implications of climate change for the next 20-30
year period.
August 2008: The International Civil Aviation Organization
(ICAO) has made a written submission to the third Session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term
Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA), which is taking place in
Accra, Ghana, from 21-27 August 2008. The submission includes a presentation of
ICAO's past and current work in reducing emissions from aircrafts and the
current international legal regime.
August 2008: The Parliamentary Forum on Sustainable
Development and Aid Effectiveness will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 26-28
August 2008, and will focus on climate change, food security and aid
effectiveness. The event will bring together African parliamentarians and
experts, as well as members of parliament from Europe and Japan.

21 August 2008: Over 1600 participants are attending the UN
climate change negotiations that opened in Accra, Ghana, and that are scheduled
to conclude on 27 August 2008.
19 August 2008: In a message delivered by Noeleen Heyzer, Executive Secretary, Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, to the Pacific Islands Forum summit meeting, which is taking place until 21 August 2008 in Alofi, Niue, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced the creation of an Inter-Agency Climate Change Centre for coordinated UN support to Pacific Island Countries and regional organizations, in partnership with the Government of Samoa.

and the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) have announced a workshop on
Harvested Wood Products in the Context of Climate Change, to be held from 9-10
September 2008, in Geneva, Switzerland.

August 2008: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a new-look
newsletter, which, in addition to sections on mitigation, adaptation, finance
and technology, includes a special focus on reducing emissions from
deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, and a summary of
key UNFCCC statements.
12 August 2008: The Permanent Missions of Pacific Small Island
Developing States (PSIDS) and co-sponsoring States are convening a discussion
on a draft UN General Assembly resolution on the threat of climate change to
international peace and security resolution on 15 August 2008, at UN
Headquarters in New York, US.
