Event: Fourth Session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Aarhus Convention [viewed]

This meeting is the fourth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the UN Economic Commission on Europe (UNECE) Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention). It will seek to provide an opportunity to discuss public participation in international forums, the procedure for accession to the Convention by States from outside the UNECE region, and the role of the Aarhus Convention in promoting sustainable development. The latter is the theme of the high-level segment on 1 July 2011. The meeting is expected to adopt the draft Chisinau Declaration on the role of the Aarhus Convention in promoting sustainable development, as a contribution to the UNCSD process.

UN/ISDR Releases Mid-Term Review of Hyogo Framework [viewed]

9 March 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has released its Mid-Term Review of the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015, subtitled "Building the Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disasters," which highlights progress made over the last five years in disaster risk reduction (DRR) and in raising the profile of disaster preparedness across international, regional, and national agendas.

Event: Meeting of UN System Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB) [viewed]

This meeting will convene in Nairobi, Kenya, to discuss issues relating to biodiversity, among others. The CEB meets twice a year and brings together the Heads of 27 UN system organizations (15 specialized agencies, 10 UN Funds and Programmes, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the World Trade Organization (WTO)) under the chairmanship of the UN Secretary-General.

UNFCCC Receives Submissions from Parties [viewed]

February 2011: Parties to the UNFCCC have responded to a call for submissions of information and views reflecting  the outcomes of the recent sessions of the Conference of the Parties (COP), the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP/MOP), the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI), the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long- term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA), and the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP).

Event: 12th Special Session of the UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum [viewed]

The Governing Council of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) decided in February 2011 to hold the 12th special session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GCSS 12/GMEF) from 20-22 February 2012. During the meeting, UNEP will launch the GEO-5 Summary for Policy Makers, on 20 February.

Event: 27th Session of UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum [viewed]

The first universal session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 18-22 February 2013. The Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC/GMEF) of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) constitutes the ministerial-level global environmental forum in which participants gather to review important and emerging policy issues in the field of the environment. Among other matters, this first-ever universal session of the UNEP GC/GMEF is expected to discuss: the new Minamata Convention on Mercury and the Executive Director's report on financing options for chemicals and wastes; enhancing cooperation and coordination within the chemicals and wastes cluster; sustainable consumption and production; and justice, governance and law for environmental sustainability.

Event: Imagining the Worst: Foresight, Ethics, and Extreme Climate Scenarios [viewed]

This conference is organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Austrian Science and Research Liaison Office Ljubljana. The conference will address the nexus of futures studies and ethics studies in the context of climate change with a strong focus on implications of worst case scenarios on governance processes on national, regional (especially Southeast Europe) and global level (e.g. UNFCCC negotiations and preparations for UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20)). In particular, the conference aims to: reflect on recent developments in ethical theory; promote ethically aware governance processes; advance futures studies; and promote the cross-sectoral dialogue of science and policy making experts.
