Human Rights Experts Publish an Open Letter to UNFCCC State Parties [viewed]

OHCHR 221 October 2014: A group of independent experts of the Human Rights Council of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has published an open letter, titled ‘A New Climate Change Agreement Must Include Human Rights Protections for All.' The letter urges State Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to recognize the adverse impacts of climate change on the enjoyment of human rights and to adopt urgent and ambitious measures to prevent further harm.

UNFCCC Secretariat Publishes Questions and Answers on Legal and Institutional Aspects of the 2015 Agreement [viewed]

UNFCCC20 October 2014: The Legal Affairs Programme of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat has published a document, titled ‘Questions and answers on some legal and institutional aspects of the 2015 agreement.' The document was prepared for the sixth part of the second session of negotiations under the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP) taking place in Bonn, Germany, from 20-25 October 2014. The UNFCCC Secretariat has prepared the questions and answers at the request of the ADP Co-Chairs.

EMG SOM20 Focuses on UN System-Wide Strategy on Environment, SDGs [viewed]

emeg25 September 2014: During the 20th Senior Officials Meeting (SOM20) of the Environment Management Group (EMG), senior management of 38 UN agencies, multilateral agreement bodies and intergovernmental financial institutions focused on coherence in environmental programming, sustainable operations and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The senior officials also undertook important discussions on the Group's contribution to the preparation of a UN System-Wide Strategy on the Environment.

cop1217 October 2014: Held from 6-17 October 2014, in Pyeongchang, the Republic of Korea, the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted a series of decisions, including the 'Pyeongchang roadmap for the enhanced implementation of the Strategic Plan and achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets,' addressing resource mobilization, capacity building, scientific and technical cooperation, linking biodiversity and poverty eradication, and monitoring implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020.

EEA Report Identifies Triggers for Adaptation Policy [viewed]

EEA14 October 2014: According to a report published by the European Environment Agency (EEA), extreme weather events and EU policies are the primary drivers of climate change adaptation policy in Europe. The report, based on a survey of national adaptation authorities, finds that information provision is the most commonly mentioned adaptation policy instrument, and water management is the most prioritized sector for adaptation.

Event: Eighth Meeting of the IRENA Council [viewed]

The 8th Meeting of the Council of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) will take place from 3-4 November, in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Sessions organized as part of the meeting will include: the Director-General's report on implementation of the Agency's 2014-2015 work program and budget; and discussions on the outcomes on the 2014 UN Climate Summit, and renewable energy and energy transformation, including in relation to IRENA's 'REthinking Energy' flagship publication. Participants at the Council Meeting will include representatives from the 21 Council member States and delegations from other IRENA member States. Prior to the Council meeting, the meetings of IRENA's Programme and Strategy Committee (PSC) and Administration and Finance Committee (AFC) will be held, on 2 November. The IRENA Council facilitates consultations and cooperation among the Agency's members and considers the draft work program and budget, and the annual report. Two committees, the PSC and AFC, assist the Council in its work.
