The historic Paris Agreement was adopted on 12 December 2015 after two weeks of intensive negotiations involving 195 countries in the French capital. It was the highest profile event of its kind, attracting the largest number of heads of state and government in history. As always, there are many interpretations of the outcome, which will enter into force in 2020. However, in terms of the market mechanisms, despite the muted language in the final text, these are firmly back on the agenda as an instrument for climate action.

France, Morocco Event Examines Mobilization from COP 21 to COP 22 [viewed]

france-moro_cop2119 January 2016: At an event hosted by the Permanent Missions of France and Morocco to the UN in Geneva, international organizations headquartered in the Swiss city heard about the outcomes of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC and ways the Paris Agreement will impact their activities. Titled 'From COP 21 to COP 22: International Geneva's Mobilization Continues,' the event also featured remarks from the incoming Moroccan Presidency on its approach to COP 22.

IRENA Assembly Focuses on Accelerating Renewable Energy Transition [viewed]

IRENA17 January 2016: The sixth session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly focused on accelerating the transition to renewable energy, in particular, by mobilizing investment. More than 1,000 officials and other stakeholders from over 150 countries convened in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), from 16-17 January 2016 to provide strategic and programmatic direction to the agency. In addition, IRENA launched a report on the economic benefits of renewable energy and announced funding for four renewable energy projects in Antigua and Barbuda, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde and Senegal.

Event: 27th Meeting of the Adaptation Fund Board [viewed]

The Adaptation Fund Board, which will meet in March 2016 for the 27th time, is the governing body of the Adaptation Fund, and is composed of 16 members and 16 alternates representing Parties to the Kyoto Protocol. The Adaptation Fund was established under the Kyoto Protocol of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Event: Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2016 [viewed]

Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) is an Abu Dhabi government initiative to address the interconnected challenges affecting energy, water and sustainable development. The largest sustainability gathering in the Middle East, ADSW encourages outcomes that pave the way toward sustainability, and provides the opportunity for dialogue and cooperation through policy dialogues, conferences, exhibitions and other events. ADSW 2016 is comprised of: an opening ceremony; the World Future Energy Summit (WFES), including a solar expo and sustainable transport zone; the International Water Summit; the EcoWaste exhibition; and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly. It also will also include the following events: Women in Sustainability, Environment and Renewable Energy; IRENA Financial Times Debate; Egypt Energy Forum; Abu Dhabi Global Action Day; and the Zayed Future Energy Prize, the United Arab Emirate's international awards for energy and sustainability pioneers.

Speakers during the opening event include: Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto; UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon; and nine heads of states, including those from the Seychelles, Palau, Kosovo, Serbia, Nigeria and Morocco.

ADSW is being hosted by Masdar, Abu Dhabi's renewable energy company, and is expected to attract more than 33,000, with over 80 heads and ministers of state, and other participants from more than 170 countries.

Event: Global Aviation Dialogues: Africa Regional Meeting [viewed]

This African regional meeting will discuss progress regarding the work of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) on a global market-based mechanism (MBM) scheme. It is one of several regional meetings forming the second round of Global Aviation Dialogues (GLADs), which will take place during the period from 20 March to 8 April 2016 at five venues across the ICAO regions. GLADs aim to ensure the full engagement of States and other stakeholders on a global MBM scheme for international aviation and to facilitate information exchange. ICAO is developing a global MBM as part of a basket of measures for addressing the contribution of international aviation to climate change.

Event: 89th Meeting of the CDM Executive Board [viewed]

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Executive Board supervises the Kyoto Protocol's CDM under the authority and guidance of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP), and is fully accountable to the CMP. It is also the point of contact for CDM project participants for the registration of projects and the issuance of Certified Emission Reductions (CERs).

Event: 12th Meeting of the Technology Executive Committee [viewed]

The Technology Executive Committee (TEC) under the UNFCCC is the policy arm of the Technnology Mechanism (TM), which aims to accelerate and expand the scope of environmentally-sound technology development and transfer. The TEC considers and recommends actions to: promote technology development and transfer to accelerate action on mitigation and adaptation; provide an overview of technological needs; and catalyze the development and use of technology road maps or action plans at the international, regional and national levels through collaboration with relevant stakeholders to support mitigation and adaptation action.

Event: High-Level Ministerial Meeting on the Implementation Sendai Framework 2015-2030 (Americas) [viewed]

This meeting will discuss the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015-2030 and define regional priorities for its implementation in the Americas. Recommendations emanating from the meeting will provide the basis for further discussion and analysis with a broader range of stakeholders in the framework of the Regional Platform for DRR 2016. The meeting is being organized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction – Regional Office for the Americas (UNISDR AM).
