ASEAN-UN Summit Highlights Plan of Action 2016-2020 [viewed]

ASEAN UN8 September 2016: Leaders of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the UN met on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit to discuss increased cooperation and strengthening their partnership. Addressing the gathering, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed cooperation between the two organizations through the ASEAN-UN Plan of Action, which addresses the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement on climate change, and gender equality and women's empowerment, among other issues.

TICAD-VI Adopts Declaration on Structural Transformation, Shared Prosperity [viewed]

ticadSeptember 2016: Heads of State and Government and representatives of Japan and 54 African countries have adopted the Nairobi Declaration, a three-year plan to promote structural economic transformation, resilient health care systems and social stability for shared prosperity. The officials were gathered for the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-VI) Summit, which focused on the theme, ‘Advancing Africa's Sustainable Development Agenda: TICAD Partnership for Prosperity.'

Adaptation and Loss and Damage Update: COP 22 Preparations Pick Up Speed; Regions Enhance DRM Cooperation [viewed]

unisdrs_unfccc_pifs1 September 2016: With the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the UNFCCC to be held in Marrakesh, Morocco, from 7-18 November 2016, less than three months away, preparations are underway. The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a number of meeting documents, and Parties have been submitting their views on a range of issues, including the Nairobi Work Programme (NWP) on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change. The outcomes of several upcoming September meetings will also feed into the Marrakesh Climate Change Conference.

COP 22 Provisional Agendas Released [viewed]

UNFCCC3 August 2016: From 7-18 November 2016, in Marrakesh, Morocco, the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP) will convene for the first time since it adopted the Paris Agreement in December 2015. In addition to the 22nd session of the COP (COP 22), the 12th session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 12), the 45th sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 45) and of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 45), as well as the second part of the first session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement (APA 1-2) will take place during the Marrakesh Climate Change Conference. The UNFCCC Secretariat has recently released the provisional agendas for all five of these meetings.

Sustainable Energy Finance Update: MDBs Boost African, Asian Energy Access and Building, Lighting Efficiency [viewed]

sustainable_energy_update1 August 2016: During the month of July, the International Energy Agency (IEA) released data demonstrating the growing market share of renewable energy, which has reached 13.8% of the world's primary energy supply and nearly a quarter of electricity production. Over the course of July, significant public investments in energy access, renewable energy and energy efficiency were announced, with financing for energy access largely focused on Asia and Africa, while renewable energy investments tended to be in Europe. The energy efficiency initiatives announced focused on the building and lighting sectors in a variety of countries.

Event: High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) 2017 [viewed]

The fifth High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), convening under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), will take place from 10-19 July 2017, including a three-day ministerial meeting of the Forum on 17-19 July. The theme of the 2017 session will be 'Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world,' as decided in UN General Assembly (UNGA) resolution A/70/299. The set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be reviewed in depth will be: Goal 1 (End poverty in all its forms everywhere); Goal 2 (End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture); Goal 3 (Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages); Goal 5 (Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls); Goal 9 (Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation); Goal 14 (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development); and Goal 17 (Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development), which will be considered each year.

July 2016 Climate Finance Update: Meetings Call for Access, Mobilization, Scaling Up [viewed]

july2016_finance1 August 2016: During the month of July, a number of high-level meetings highlighted the need for enhanced focus on climate finance. Resilience and disaster recovery projects in Asia and Africa received new financing. Climate funds launched calls for readiness and private sector support projects, and a number of entities reported on lessons learned from climate finance in agriculture, forests, gender mainstreaming and regional resilience investment planning.
