4 July 2011: Finland has announced that it will contribute EUR250,000 to the Special Voluntary Trust Fund of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to support implementation of the CBD Gender Plan of Action and activities to mainstream gender in the three Rio Conventions and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
1 July 2011: The 17th session of the African Union (AU) Summit has adopted a decision on youth employment and other measures to support the Summit's theme "Youth empowerment for sustainable development," as well as decisions to prepare for the upcoming 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UNFCCC and the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
1 July 2011: The third International Conference of the African Renewable Energy Alliance (AREA), held on the theme “Renewable Energy and Gender,” aimed to provide a platform for participants to consult about the policies, technologies and financial mechanisms needed to promote renewable energy deployment in the African region, with a focus on the linkages between energy and gender.
This Forum was cancelled due to flooding in Bangkok. It was being organized by the Regional Climate Change Adaptation Knowledge Platform for Asia and the Asia Pacific Adaptation Network. Convening under the theme "Mainstreaming Adaptation in Development: Adaptation in Action," this Forum will provide an opportunity to share findings and innovations, opportunities and challenges in mainstreaming climate change adaptation into development. Panel sessions will address, inter alia: managing water for food and agriculture; disaster management and climate change adaptation; transport and communication infrastructure; gender and adaptation mainstreaming; business responsibilities and contributions; options for small island States; climate-induced migration and livelihood security; and integrating adaptation and mitigation actions. The Adaptation Knowledge Platform has been jointly established by the Asian Institute of Technology/UN Environment Programme Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (AIT - UNEP RRC.AP) the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), the Swedish Environmental Secretariat for Asia (SENSA) and UNEP with funding support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). The Adaptation Network, part of the Global Adaptation Network, aims to build climate resilience of vulnerable human systems, ecosystems and economies through the mobilization of knowledge and technologies to support adaptation capacity building, policy-setting, planning and practices.
22 June 2011: Speaking at the Board for the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Rebeca Grynspan, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Associate Administrator, stressed the role of energy access for achieving sustainable human development and accelerating progress on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), noting it can help keep children in school, deliver health services, and free women from the burden of time-consuming domestic activities.
June 2011: The members of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), a consortium of 14 forest-related organizations and secretariats, have put together a joint calendar of thematic press releases to disseminate the activities taking place throughout the world to celebrate the International Year of Forests.
21 June 2011: Acting on the recommendation of the Security Council, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) has unanimously appointed UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for a second five-year term beginning 1 January 2012.
3 June 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has released the Chair's Summary of the Third Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and World Reconstruction Conference, in which Asha-Rose Migiro, UN Deputy Secretary-General and Chair of the Third Session, highlights that DRR should be at the forefront of efforts to preserve and protect the balance of nature, and ensure sustainable development and well being for future generations.
1 June 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) called for a dramatic increase in support for sustainable agriculture, including to smallholder farmers, as a way to drive green growth and reduce poverty, on the occasion of the launch of the Environment and Natural Resource Management (ENRM) Policy.
27 May 2011: The 10th Session of the UN Permanent Forum for Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), which convened at UN Headquarters in New York, US, from 16-27 May 2011, focused on reviewing progress made on issues ranging from economic and social development to the environment, and whether indigenous peoples have given free, prior and informed consent to decisions affecting their communities, and human rights issues.
