Pacific Leaders Adopt Declaration on Climate Change Action [viewed]

PIF11 September 2015: Leaders at the 46th Pacific Island Forum have issued a Declaration on Climate Change Action, laying out 13 points that Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs) call for as part of the outcome of the Paris Climate Change Conference in December 2015. The Declaration also underscores the growing threat posed by climate change to PICTs, and the difficulty the region faces in adapting.

ECLAC Reports on MDGs Progress [viewed]

Civil Society Speakers Selected for Sustainable Development Summit [viewed]

sustainable_summit_20158 September 2015: The Office of the President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) has finalized the selection of 24 representatives of civil society organizations, NGOs and the Major Groups to speak during the UN Sustainable Development Summit's opening plenary, six interactive dialogues and other plenary meetings. The UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) notes that 435 applications were received, and speakers were selected through "an open, transparent and participatory process" based on a short-list produced by a civil society Selection Committee.

Event: Global Network Conference on Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production [viewed]

This conference on Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) will showcase 20 years of delivering RECP services to industry and identify areas of interest and potential partnership at the national, regional and global levels within the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, this conference will: explore innovative approaches to RECP through exchanging best practices and sharing success stories and replicable solutions; address such topics as low-carbon production, chemicals management, water resources, eco-industrial parks, waste management and gender mainstreaming; and provide the opportunity to chart a path forward for RECP promotion. This conference will bring together senior government officials, international RECP practitioners, representatives of development financial institutions, and cleaner production experts from research institutions and academia. The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), in cooperation with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), is organizing the conference. The Conference will be held in conjunction with the World Resources Forum 2015.

The joint Programme on RECP aims to improve resource efficiency and the environmental performance of businesses and other organizations through scaling up and mainstreaming the application of RECP methods, techniques and policies.

Pacific Islands Development Forum Adopts Suva Declaration on Climate Change [viewed]

pidf4 September 2015: Leaders of the Pacific Islands Development Forum, emphasizing their "grave distress" over climate change, are calling for increased support for adaptation measures and the creation of a Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS) regional task force on climate financing. The leaders called for these and other actions in the 'Suva Declaration on Climate Change,' adopted at the Third Pacific Islands Development Forum Summit of Leaders (PIDF 3).

Co-Chairs Announced for Post-2015 Summit Interactive Dialogues [viewed]

post2015_summit31 August 2015: UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Sam Kutesa has announced the Heads of State and Government who will serve as Co-Chairs of each interactive dialogue session during the UN summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda (Sustainable Development Summit), taking place on 25-27 September 2015. In his letter accompanying the list, Kutesa indicates that the selection of Co-Chairs was based on submissions as well as consultations with the regional groups of Member States.

DESA Publishes Special Studies on Post-2015 Summit Dialogues [viewed]

post2015_summitAugust 2015: Background papers have been made available for each of the six themes for the interactive dialogues during the UN summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda. The six themes were agreed during the fifth session of the intergovernmental negotiation process on the post-2015 development agenda, on 22 May 2015. The papers, also listed as special studies, are published on the Sustainable Development Knowledge Platform managed by the Division for Sustainable Development at the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

UN Officials Urge Parliamentarian Support for SDGs, Climate Agreement [viewed]

Ipu31 August 2015: Addressing the Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on parliamentarians to help advance the post-2015 development agenda and ensure an equal footing for civil society in its implementation. He stressed parliamentarians' role in ensuring the agenda is “translated from the global to the national,” and that implementing and monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will require strong and close partnership between states and civil society.

UN Secretary-General Visits Nigeria, Discusses 2030 Agenda [viewed]

UN Secretary-General Calls for Climate Change Action, SD Implementation [viewed]
