World Bank Publishes Study on Climate Change Impacts in North African Cities [viewed]

4 June 2011: The World Bank led a study on “Climate Change Adaptation and Natural Disasters Preparedness in the Coastal Cities of North Africa,” which estimates that the economic impacts of climate change in Alexandria, Casablanca and Tunis will be more than $1 billion each between now and 2030.

CDM Executive Board Launches Calls for Public Inputs [viewed]

3 June: At its 61st meeting, held from 30 May - 3 June 2011 in Bonn, Germany, the Executive Board of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) decided to launch four calls for public input on: identification of common issues in the implementation of registered afforestation/reforestation (A/R) CDM project activities; key issues identified in relation to the development of a solar cooker methodology; draft small-scale methodology for water saving devices; and how to include co-benefits in the documentation of CDM project activities, and the role of the different actors and stakeholders in this process.

In Bonn, UNFCCC Executive Secretary Underscores Growing Momentum of Global Climate Action [viewed]

6 June 2011: The UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn opened on 6 June 2011, and is scheduled to conclude on 17 June 2011. The conference will include the 34th sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA). It also comprises the second part of the 16th session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP) and the second part of the 14th session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA).

20 May 2011: The Global Compact Week, held from 16-20 May 2011, in Copenhagen, Denmark, convened practitioners engaged in the initiative's working groups, issue platforms and Local Networks, providing an opportunity to share experiences across issues and countries. The Week included the first UN Global Compact Annual Meeting, the Annual Local Network Forum and the third annual meeting of Caring for Climate signatories, which addressed the business contribution to global sustainability ahead of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

GEF Council Approves Programme that Includes Great Green Wall Initiative [viewed]

UNESCO's Executive Board Calls for Developing a Biodiversity Initiative [viewed]

19 May 2011: The Executive Board of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has confirmed its call for UNESCO to develop a coherent Biodiversity Initiative encompassing all areas of competence and work of UNESCO – natural and social sciences, education, culture and communication. The Initiative will focus on the underlying drivers of biodiversity erosion and loss, and will encompass actions aimed at providing assistance to UNESCO member States underpinning the implementation of the UN system-wide Strategic Plan for Biodiversity.
