Event: 31st Meeting of the Executive Committee of the Group on Earth Observations [viewed]

The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) will convene the 31st meeting of its Executive Committee (ExCom) from 8-9 July 2014, in Geneva, Switzerland. The ExCom guides the work of GEO and the activities of the GEO Secretariat. The 13 members of ExCom represent the regions of Africa, Americas, Asia/Oceania, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Europe.

STAP Advises GEF Assembly on Environmentally Sustainable Development [viewed]

GEF STAP24 May 2014: The Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) has released a report to the 5th meeting of the GEF Assembly, providing recommendations for advancing environmentally sustainable development under the sixth GEF replenishment (GEF-6). The report, titled ‘Delivering Global Environmental Benefits for Sustainable Development,' also reviews the expansion of the Advisory Panel's roles and responsibilities, and its contributions in GEF-5.

Military Advisory Board Identifies Climate Change as Security Threat [viewed]

accelerating-risks-climate-change13 May 2014: The CNA Corporation's Military Advisory Board has published a report, titled ‘National Security and the Accelerating Risks of Climate Change,' which provides an update to a 2007 CNA report that described climate change as a “threat multiplier.” The 2014 report reexamines climate change impacts on US national security within a more complex and integrated world and, looking at new vulnerabilities and tensions, identifies climate change as a “catalyst for instability and conflict.”

Event: Milankovitch Anniversary UNESCO Symposium on Water Management in Transition Countries [viewed]

This meeting will address the theme “Water Management in Transition Countries as Impacted by Climate and Other Global Changes, Lessons from Paleoclimate and Regional Issues” with the intent to identify programme areas to address at the 7th World Water Forum, taking place in March 2015 in Daegu, Republic of Korea. Fifth Clean Energy Ministerial Addresses Finance, Markets and Energy-Water Nexus [viewed]

cem513 May 2014: Energy ministers and high-level delegates from 23 countries, as well as representatives from the private sector and international organizations, gathered for the Fifth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM5) to discuss accelerating the transition toward a global clean energy economy and to assess progress made since CEM1 in 2010. Around 250 participants attended the meeting, which convened a set of public-private roundtables and a Ministerial segment on clean energy, integration, energy efficiency and human capacity.
