Event: UNECE and UNDP Belarus Neman River Basin Seminars [viewed]

The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Belarus have organized this week-long meeting as part of the project “River basin management and climate change adaptation in the Neman River Basin”. Meeting participants, including representatives of government ministries, water agencies, UNECE, UNDP, and other stakeholders, will discuss the findings of the first joint assessment of water resources and climate change impacts in the Neman Basin, released earlier in October. The meeting includes field trips to analytical control laboratories, hydropower plants, monitoring stations, quarries, and other water facilities in Belarus and Lithuania.

First South West Indian Ocean Climate Outlook Forum Warns of Low Precipitation Forecasts [viewed]

11 October 2012: The first South West Indian Ocean Climate Outlook Forum (SWIOCOF) was co-organized by Météo France, the Indian Ocean Commission (projet Acclimate) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). This first Forum built the capacity of meteorologists on the methods and tools used to develop seasonal climate outlooks, and tailoring them to the challenges faced by islands.

Caribbean Ministers Sign Regional Water Security Declaration [viewed]

10 October 2012: Ministers responsible for water resources management in nine Caribbean countries have signed a declaration on water security at the 8th Annual High-Level Session (HLS) Ministerial Forum, a joint initiative of the Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C) and the Caribbean Water and Wastewater Association (CWWA).

UNEP/GEF Project to Build Climate Change Resilience in Afghanistan [viewed]

12 October 2012: A project with funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) will provide assistance to communities that are vulnerable to climate change in Afghanistan, and will build the capacity of Afghan institutions to address climate change risk.

Event: World Climate Summit 2012 [viewed]

The third annual World Climate Summit, which is organized alongside the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), will bring together government leaders and representatives from the business and finance community to discuss issues related to a low-carbon economy and industrial, financial, political and innovation drivers to accelerate progress in mitigating and adapting to climate change. The meeting will focus specifically on Qatar and the Middle East. Topics of discussion include: public-private partnerships; renewable energy; agriculture and water; emission reductions; transportation; carbon pricing; and energy efficiency.

The Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS) was launched in 2009 by the World Climate Conference – 3 as a global partnership of governments and organizations that produce and use climate services[1]. This initiative of the United Nations system seeks to facilitate global access to continuously improved climate services in the four priority sectors of agriculture and food security, disaster risk reduction (DRR), health and water by the end of 2017. The objective for end-2021 is to facilitate access to improved climate services across all climate-sensitive sectors.

Rio Conventions Pavilion Opens with Focus on Integrated Science, Assessments and Monitoring [viewed]

9 October 2012: The Rio Conventions Pavilion at the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties  (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) commenced on 9 October 2012, for sessions on the theme “Towards Integrated Science, Assessments and Monitoring for the Rio Conventions.” Neil Pratt, CBD Secretariat, opened the Pavilion, underscoring its purpose to “encourage and support the implementation of the Rio Conventions at the national level.”
