Landlocked Developing Countries' Trade Ministers Adopt Almaty Declaration [viewed]

UN-OHRLLS14 September 2012: Ministers and officials responsible for trade of the Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) met in Almaty, Kazakhstan, at the Fourth Meeting of LLDCs' Trade Ministers, to define common positions on trade and development needs for LLDCs. The meeting concluded with the adoption of the Almaty Ministerial Declaration, which calls for international support to address the negative impacts of climate change on the availability of natural resources, in particular water and arable land.

InterAction Council, UNU-INWEH Launch Report on Global Water Crisis [viewed]

11 September 2012: The UN University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) and InterAction Council (IAC), along with the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation, have published a report calling for the UN Security Council to take stronger action on water issues. “The Global Water Crisis: Addressing an Urgent Security Issue” presents the outcomes of a May 2011 meeting of IAC, and outlines steps in the Québec Declaration on the World Water Crisis, which resulted from that meeting.

Canada and US Amend Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement [viewed]

7 September 2012: Lisa Jackson, Administrator, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Peter Kent, Minister of Environment, Canada, have signed an amendment to the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, originally signed in 1972. The amendments strengthen US and Canadian cooperative action to address water quality threats and prevent harm.

UNEP, GEF Guidebook Outlines Technologies for Climate Change Mitigation in Building Sector [viewed]

August 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Risø Centre on Energy, Climate and Sustainable Development and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) have published a guidebook on mitigation technologies and practices in the building sector, with examples of the use of solar energy, energy efficient building materials, and urban planning for storm water management.

World Bank Approves Loan for Greening Himachal Pradesh's Development Policy [viewed]

World Bank6 September 2012: The World Bank approved a US$100 million loan to support India's Himachal Pradesh (HP) State in moving towards a green growth path, through the protection of watersheds in the mountainous region and the development of sustainable hydropower. A second development policy loan is expected to follow, with funding from the Clean Technology Fund (CTF).

UNECE Watercourses Convention Celebrates 20th Anniversary [viewed]

UNECE4 September 2012: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (UNECE Watercourses Convention), signed in 1992 in Helsinki, returned to that city to celebrate its 20th anniversary. A two-day meeting was held to reflect on the accomplishments of the Convention and contemplate its future as it is readied to allow accession to the Convention by UN members outside the UNECE.

CIF, AfDB Funding to Bolster Niger Water Sector [viewed]

3 September 2012: Niger has been awarded US$22 million in financing from the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), in addition to financial and technical resources from the African Development Bank (AfDB), to support the Niger Water Resources Mobilization and Development Project, as well as provide assistance to scale-up best practices within a number of other water resource management projects in Niger.
