Event: Sixth Caribbean Environment Forum and Exhibition (CEF 5) and 16th Annual Wider Caribbean Waste Management Conference (ReCaribe) [viewed]

These two events will be held simultaneously under the unified theme "The Green Economy: Challenges and Opportunities in Managing Health, Water, Waste, Land, Energy, Climate Change and our Natural Resources" to emphasize technologies, actions and strategies to address key environmental and health issues facing Caribbean small island developing States (SIDS). The CEF series on Caribbean health and environment has been organized by the Caribbean Community's (CARICOM) Caribbean Environmental Health Institute (CEHI) biennially since 2000. The annual ReCaribe has been organized since 1995 by Clean Islands International (CII) to discuss waste management issues in the wider Caribbean region. The combined event is being co-sponsored by the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Caribbean Regional Coordinating Unit (CAR/RCU), the Global Environment Facility's (GEF) Integrating Watershed and Coastal Area Management project (IWCAM), and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Barcelona Convention Parties Call for a Blue Economy to Safeguard the Mediterranean [viewed]

UNEP10 February 2012: The 17th Ordinary Meeting of the Contracting Parties (COP 17) to the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean and its Protocols concluded with the adoption of the Paris Declaration, which calls for a “blue” economy to safeguard and promote a clean, healthy, and productive Mediterranean environment.

Expert Group Assesses Sectoral Data on Socioeconomic Impacts of Climate Change in the Caribbean [viewed]

3 February 2012: The subregional headquarters for the Caribbean of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) recently convened an expert group to discuss the status of regional efforts to develop economic frameworks to assess the economic and social impacts of climate change in the Caribbean in key sectors.

Event: World Congress on Water, Climate and Energy [viewed]

This meeting is the inaugural meeting of the Congress on Water, Climate and Energy, and participants will explore the topics of resilient and sustainable cities with a focus on climate change adaptation and mitigation. The meeting will further examine how to incorporate climate change adaptation and uncertainty into the city vision and infrastructure, and will include solutions such as the role of regulation, technologies and smart networks. The meeting is organized by the International Water Association in partnership with the UN World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP), the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), and ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability.

New UN-Water Chair and Vice-Chair Take Office [viewed]

8 February 2012: UN-Water has announced that Michel Jarraud, World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretary-General, and Albert Diphoorn, UN-Habitat Urban Basic Services Branch Coordinator, are taking up the positions as Chair and Vice-Chair, respectively, of UN-Water for a two-year term.

The inaugural International Water Summit will be hosted by Masdar and held alongside the 2013 World Future Energy Summit (WFES) and the Abu Dhabi International Renewable Energy Conference (ADIREC). The aim of the International Water Summit is to provide an opportunity for participants to network with global politicians, experts from the international water community and leaders from the public and private sectors, and collaborate in the development of solutions for some of the world's most water-scarce regions. The Summit is part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW).
