2 December 2010: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has launched a report titled "Latin America and the Caribbean: A Biodiversity Superpower" during the Ibero-American Summits of Heads of State and Governments held in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
November 2010: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) gave a final green light to a series of full-sized projects during the month of November, which allows their final approval by implementing agencies to commence activities, including on: biodiversity conservation in Venezuela, Lao PDR and Ecuador; climate change in Chile; and removal of HCFCs in the Russian Federation.
25 November 2010: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released the "New Africa Water Atlas," which shows how the challenges of water scarcity in Africa are compounded by high population growth, socioeconomic and climate change impacts and, in some cases, policy choices.
25 November 2010: The second session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol on Water and Health, which convened from 23-25 November 2010, in Bucharest, Romania, adopted the Guidance on Water Supply and Sanitation in Extreme Events.
Climate change clearly has health impacts which are mostly related to water. Health hazards may be caused by extreme temperatures, an increase in water temperature, water scarcity, and chemical and biological contamination of water used for different purposes (including food production and processing). Increasing water scarcity may limit access to water for drinking water and sanitation, increase the concentration of pollutants, reduce the self-cleaning capacity of sewers and limit the ability of natural ecosystems to assimilate wastes.
23 November 2010: In an opening statement to the Climate, Water and Development Segment of the Third African Water Week, Rhoda Peace Tumusiime, Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture of the African Union (AU), addressed the links between climate change, water, infrastructure and livelihoods.
This expert meeting of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will further explore issues related to human settlements and infrastructure as an input to the AR5 process.
November 2010: The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and the WorldFish Center have released a research report on "Climate Change, Water and Agriculture in the Greater Mekong Subregion."
15 October 2010: The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) will be supporting a three-year research for development project with partners in Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan and Yemen.
17 November 2010: The European Investment Bank (EIB) will provide technical support for sustainable and climate-resilient water projects in Samoa. EIB support will target the rehabilitation and upgrade of independent water schemes in Samoa under a EUR 250,000 technical assistance programme, which will also ensure community participation and improve drinking water quality and climate resilience.
