Event: First session of the Executive Council Working Group on WMO Strategic and Operational Planning [viewed]

This meeting of the first session of the Executive Council Working Group on World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Strategic and Operational Planning (WG/SOP) is expected to address: WMO strategic and budget planning, including the WMO Monitoring and Evaluation System; the role and operation of national meteorological and hydrological services; improving WMO processes, practices and governance; the Quality Management Framework; and progress in implementing the Madrid Action Plan and preparations for the Madrid+10 Conference in 2017. The Executive Council, which the WG/SOP will report to, is the WMO's executive body, which, inter alia: meets annually; implements Congress decisions; coordinates programmes; examines use of budgetary resources; provides technical information, counsel and assistance in the WMO's fields; and acts on matters affecting international meteorology.

January 2016 Climate Finance Update [viewed]

finace_climateFebruary 2016: During the month of January, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank and the Adaptation Fund, among others, reported on new funding approvals and other climate finance news. Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), climate funds and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) launched publications on, inter alia, blended climate finance, climate co-finance tracking and climate risk management.

FAO Provides Guidance on Sustainable Intensification of Cereal Production [viewed]

Event: Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2016 [viewed]

Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) is an Abu Dhabi government initiative to address the interconnected challenges affecting energy, water and sustainable development. The largest sustainability gathering in the Middle East, ADSW encourages outcomes that pave the way toward sustainability, and provides the opportunity for dialogue and cooperation through policy dialogues, conferences, exhibitions and other events. ADSW 2016 is comprised of: an opening ceremony; the World Future Energy Summit (WFES), including a solar expo and sustainable transport zone; the International Water Summit; the EcoWaste exhibition; and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly. It also will also include the following events: Women in Sustainability, Environment and Renewable Energy; IRENA Financial Times Debate; Egypt Energy Forum; Abu Dhabi Global Action Day; and the Zayed Future Energy Prize, the United Arab Emirate's international awards for energy and sustainability pioneers.

Speakers during the opening event include: Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto; UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon; and nine heads of states, including those from the Seychelles, Palau, Kosovo, Serbia, Nigeria and Morocco.

ADSW is being hosted by Masdar, Abu Dhabi's renewable energy company, and is expected to attract more than 33,000, with over 80 heads and ministers of state, and other participants from more than 170 countries.

As 2016 Begins, UN Calls for Delivering on SDGs [viewed]

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)January 2016: The world officially commenced implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development on 1 January 2016, with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) succeeding the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which expired on 31 December 2015. On the occasion, the UN highlighted the importance of partnerships and international solidarity in implementing the 2030 Agenda, and called for sharing experiences and tracking progress, including through an Annual SDG Progress Report.

The Day highlighted opportunities for growth, such as the production of high quality, high value products like fair trade, organic cocoa, coffee, herbs, honey, spices and other niche market products, and underscored constraints in mountain development, especially with regard to food insecurity and climate change.
