UNEA-2 Discusses Implementation of 2030 Agenda, Paris Agreement [viewed]

unep_may1628 May 2015: The second session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-2) of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has concluded with the adoption of 24 resolutions as well as decisions about UNEA-3. Some major areas of focus of the meeting included, inter alia: implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement; illegal trade in wildlife; and marine litter and debris. UNEA-2 convened under the theme, 'Delivering on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.'

Adaptation and Loss and Damage Update: Bonn Talks Focus on Adaptation Planning, Reporting, Implementation, Support [viewed]

who_wmo_ecosoc_fao31 May 2016: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and accompanying targets, has made it clear that climate change and sustainable development are inextricably linked. May 2016 news relating to adaptation and loss and damage brought out some of those interlinkages with particular prominence. Not only do events, publications and initiatives reported here contribute to the implementation of SDG 13 (Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts) generally, they also help implement a range of other SDGs and related targets.

Event: European Development Days 2016 [viewed]

The European Development Days (EDD) 2016 will convene under the theme ‘Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Action and Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development'. The Forum will bring together over 5,000 participants from the development community in over 120 main sessions and side events. Sessions will focus on the following topics: people (inequalities, gender, leave no one behind); planet (climate change; circular economy; sustainable consumption and production (SCP); and water-food-energy nexus); prosperity (inclusive, sustainable and resilient cities; science, technology and innovation (STI); and trade, growth and sustainable development); peace (working with fragile states; migration and refugees; inclusive and peaceful societies); and partnership (means of implementation; ensuring accountability; and engaging the private sector). A follow-up event, the EU-Africa Business Forum, will focus on sustainable energy and impact investigating, highlighting the role of the private sector in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Environmental Degradation Leading Cause of Deaths Globally, Says UN Report [viewed]

Healthy Environment - Healthy People23 May 2016: Environmental degradation and pollution cause almost a quarter of all deaths, up to 234 times as many premature deaths as occur in conflicts annually and the deaths of more than 25% of all children under the age of five, according to a UN report released to coincide with the second session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-2). The report, titled ‘Healthy Environment, Healthy People,' emphasizes the importance of a healthy environment to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and addresses dangers posed by air pollution, chemicals, climate change and other issues linking environmental quality to health.

GEO619 May 2016: A series of regional reports on the state of the planet's health deliver the message that environmental deterioration is occurring much faster than previously thought and action is needed now to reverse the worst trends. The ‘Global Environmental Outlook (GEO-6): Regional Assessments,' published by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), is a compilation of six reports examining environmental issues affecting the world's six regions: the Pan-European region, North America, Asia and the Pacific, West Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), and Africa.

IWC8 Celebrates 25 Years of GEF Investments in International Waters [viewed]

Event: Fifth International Conference on Climate Change Adaptation 2016 [viewed]

The Fifth International Conference on Climate Change Adaptation 2016 (CCA 2016) will take place under the theme, 'Challenges and Issues in Adaptation'. The event aims to provide a platform for participants to build relationships, learn about best practices and foster research collaborations on adaptation. CCA 2016 sessions will include: adaptation services; land and water; resource efficiency; developing a bio-economy; greenhouse gas (GHG) monitoring; making transitions happen; sustainable cities and people; and the built environment. The International Center for Research & Development (ICRD) and Unique Conferences Canada are organizing the conference.

Energy Actors Showcase Innovative Sustainable Energy Tools, Resources, Technologies and Business Models [viewed]

energy_actors13 May 2016: The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), which seeks to support countries in their transition to sustainable energy, has concluded its '2016 Innovation Week' following a series of activities that addressed the theme ‘The Age of Renewable Power.' IRENA's work on energy innovation aims, in part, to support Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 (Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all). In addition to IRENA, many other actors have made recent announcements that are expected to contribute to SDG 7. Adaptation Conference Emphasizes Resilience, Financial Inclusion, Links with Development [viewed]
