Based on evidence gathered by a group of scientists and economists over these two decades, the book is intended as an accessible source for decision makers and practitioners working on food security, health and nutrition, water scarcity and climate adaptation.

WMO, Norwegian Refugee Council to Enhance African Countries' Climate Resilience [viewed]

wmo-nrc17 June 2015: A Norwegian NGO and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) are partnering to increase the capacity of governments in Africa to address climate change, extreme weather events and variable rainfall. Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by WMO and the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), experts will work with the national institutions of vulnerable countries to develop climate information and products and operationalize the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS).

Papal Encyclical Highlights Climate Change as Critical ‘Moral Issue' [viewed]

vatican18 June 2015: Pope Francis has released his encyclical, which calls on the Catholic world and "all men and women of good will” to address global environmental deterioration. The papal letter, titled ‘Laudato Si' or ‘Praised Be' (a reference to a prayer from the Pope's namesake St. Francis, the patron saint of ecology), declares that climate change is one of the principal challenges facing humanity and that the science of climate change is clear. Pope Francis adds that the Catholic Church views climate change as a moral issue that must be addressed in order to protect the Earth, "our common home."

Southern, Eastern European Countries Seek Ways to Adopt Climate-friendly Technologies [viewed]

fao-iea-ebrd17 June 2015: A workshop for post-Soviet and southern and eastern Mediterranean countries convened to discuss policies and investment conditions conducive to the development and transfer of energy efficiency, renewable energy and other low-carbon technologies. The workshop was organized by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), and hosted by the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources.

'Targets Tracker' Highlights Gaps Between SDGs and National Priorities [viewed]

Ramsar COP 12 Adopts Declaration of Punta del Este, 16 Resolutions [viewed]

ramsar_cop129 June 2015: The 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (COP 12) agreed on four strategic priorities that link the wise use of wetlands to solving pressing issues, such as climate change and food and water security. Noting the loss of 64% of global wetlands since 1900, the final declaration calls for strengthening partnerships “beyond those responsible for the operation and maintenance of Ramsar Sites and important wetlands,” to enhance the Convention's implementation.

Event: 49th Meeting of the GEF Council [viewed]

The GEF Council meets twice a year to approve new projects with global environmental benefits in the GEF's focal areas (biodiversity, climate change mitigation, chemicals and waste, international waters, land degradation, sustainable forest management) and integrated approach pilots (sustainable cities, taking deforestation out of commodity chains, and sustainability and resilience for food security in Sub-Saharan Africa), and provide guidance to the GEF Secretariat and Agencies. A CSO Consultation will take place the day before the Council meeting.

GEF Council Approves Largest Proposed Work Program in History of GEF Financing [viewed]

Participants at the 48th meeting of the GEF Council 4 June 2015: The 48th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council adopted the largest proposed Work Program in the history of GEF financing, involving a total of US$709 million of GEF Trust Fund resources, plus an indicative amount of US$4.81 billion in co-financing. The Work Program encompasses Integrated Approach Pilots (IAPs) on sustainable cities, food security in sub-Saharan Africa, and taking deforestation out of commodity supply chains, as well as other projects and programs.

Event: 67th Semi-annual IEA-ETSAP Meeting [viewed]

The International Energy Agency's (IEA) Energy Technology Systems Analysis Program (ETSAP) will hold its 67th semi-annual meeting from 1-2 June 2015 in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Hosted by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the meeting will comprise two events: the ETSAP Regular Workshop; and the ETSAP Executive Committee Meeting. Topics covered during the workshop will include: impacts of renewable energy promotion; renewable energy technology integration; forecasting road transport energy demand; the energy-water nexus; decarbonization pathways; and synergies and co-benefits of climate change mitigation. The event will be held back to back with the International Energy Workshop 2015, hosted by IRENA in Abu Dhabi, the UAE, from 3-5 June.
